The shine is off Stearns and Mendoza. Worse than starting at zero, they’re playing from behind. This year’s meltdown will forever be attached to them — until it’s not. There’s only one thing that changes legacy, and they know it.

Mets must revise their thinking on rotation, defense to avoid mistakes of 2025
The Mets clearly need change, but not in a knee-jerk kind of way. Their future requires hard decisions.

The New York Mets' collapse is one of the worst you'll ever see. Despite being 21 games over .500 in June and owning baseball's best record at the time, the Mets failed to make the playoffs. Making things worse, no one "chased" them down. They just blew it.

Mets will start Clay Holmes tomorrow. Hearing that if anyone has the inside track on starting Sunday, it's David Peterson, but he's available out of the pen before then. So is Sean Manaea. Jonah Tong could be available out of the pen on Sunday.

Two years ago, the Mets talked to a 20-year-old Jonah Tong, fresh off a 6.00 ERA and a 20 percent walk rate, about how he was helping create a new standard for Mets pitching.

On an arrival (of Tong and potentially of that standard) faster than anyone could have anticipated:

Tong, 22, has led the minor leagues in ERA and strikeouts. On Friday, he'll make his major-league debut.

Juan Soto is out of the game in the fourth, after fouling a ball hard off his left shin last inning.

This is a role the Mets need of Brazoban especially if they do go ahead and acquire another high-leverage reliever. Suddenly, their bullpen will feature a bunch of one-inning leverage relievers. That is great for the playoffs. But there's still two months of the regular season.

Mets want Brazobán to stretch out a little in Triple A, to about the 40-pitch range. That longer relief role was what they’d initially envisioned for him earlier this year, before he pitched his way into more leverage spots.

The Mets are acquiring left-handed reliever Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles for Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster, league sources confirmed. SNY first reported.
