Seven years! Time flies when you're having fun, and it's been an honour and a privilege to be part of the Digital Foundry team - a collection of people with so much insight and experience, but also heaping helpings of comradery, humour and passion.
Hi neighbour cat, it's nice that you come to check in on us
Yeah! I don't have much range but I'll be making an apple crumble tomorrow
Today's bake: chocolate chip banana muffins 🧁
Haha living dangerously! This plus rice is luxury though
Today's breakfast: steamed egg!

Really simple to make: just whisk two eggs and some salt, add 200ml of warm (half/half tap/boiling water), then steam (using a bowl in a saucepan with water in the bottom) for 10-15 minutes. Cut lines, add a bit of soy sauce and sesame oil, and enjoy.
If the internet seems a bit rubbish today, it's because AWS is having issues and a ton of stuff relies on it
Did a work bubble tea class last night! Cool to learn that it's not too tricky to make at home :)
Another beautifully shot, convivially explained and just fascinating video on sound and stereos from Posy

the mariners just hit a ball over the fence. i'd imagine they have a backup baseball on hand for such occasions
Even so, I hope that Microsoft continue to streamline the setup process, with the goal of equalling or beating the Switch 2 or Steam Deck. These teams are made of smart people who will have experienced and raised this stuff, it just needs to be prioritised by management.
I'm guessing there are significant engineering/ budget challenges that prevent the obvious stuff, like shipping the device in a playable state and then installing updates when idle, or having the setup be a phone app that gets your input once and then lets you know when the console is ready to play.
Yeah, I'm coming at this with similar experience (I've tested 5 pc gaming handhelds) and I can't imagine what a random guy off the street is going to make of this introduction. We're well away from modern consoles being instantly playable out of the box, but this really requires investment to start.
Anyway, it's been an hour to complete setup, only just made it to the actual interface and it's 1am. I guess I'll set a game to install overnight and check actually playing in the morning!
* oh nice free game pass let's redeem it
* "Looks like there was a problem"
* Press the only button - ooh we're out of the Xbox interface after two seconds
* Claim button in the MS Store turns into asking for a £10.99 subscription - can I just have the 3 months first without having to subscribe..?
* now we're onto the Xbox interface - which is installing an update. Why can this part not happen as part of the previous windows update?
* "Sign in with your Microsoft account to continue" lol what I literally just signed into Windows. Maybe just use that as the default for Xbox too?
* happy to see an MS sign in with qr code option which works well
* Fingerprint setup takes ages "Your device is having trouble recognising you - make sure your sensor is clean"
* Setting a pin with various inputs spread across the gamepad is real slick
* "Get more from Asus device" is poor grammar
* 26 minutes later and one Asus noise later, and we're updated (on 1.8gbps internet)
* Microsoft sign in! Great. But pressing A does absolutely nothing. Moving the sticks and d-pad does absolutely nothing. This was working prior to the restart... Touch screen works, but it's a disappointing bug
I mean I will say that it's *slightly* faster than the standard Windows installation - but there's still so far to go. If only the company that makes Xbox and the company that makes Windows could work together somehow
* "Your device will restart after you name it" so why didn't you ask me before the last restart?!
* Ducking Asus sound again it's past midnight bro
* "Checking for Windows updates"
* "Downloading, 0%, this could take a while"
* Text doesn't fit screen despite being unique to this device
* "checking for updates" "please keep your pc on" "your pc will restart" oh look we're back to "just a moment"
* Why can I not disable the ducking Asus sword sound that plays every time it starts, the volume is fully off in Windows
* "Please review the license agreement"
Xbox Ally X setup impressions:
* Loooong "please wait" step before any interface is shown
* Why so many questions about keyboard layouts?
* If you need to know so much, there should be an app that takes your ms signin info and puts all that stuff into the Ally, like setting up a new phone or watch
