In the PNAS page, there's a link to an appendix where they explain that they made vectors for odorants based on occurrence/absence of descriptors in the Atlas of Odor Character Profiles, and state the notion of equidistribution they used between a mixture and their full database space of odorants

by the way whenever you get whole milk and skim milk in the same purchase we flag your credit card for suspicious activity. be cause we know what you're doing. unlicensed 2% milk. and other percents too. "bathtub dairy," they call it. despicable
