The greatest significance of today's date is the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people. They survive, because they have to

"Curl up on the couch with a good book"

It's nice if you can do that.

Be grateful if you can.

It's a world of wonder some will never know, and others only know rarely.
zoeblank.bsky.social
And I haven't been able to go back to that.

I can't dive into Star Wars like I could before.

I can't read like I could before.

I can't even watch movies or shows like I could before.

I read the books, short stories, chapters, in their place in the timeline. I made a long playlist of all Star Wars scores (games, etc., included, only limited by what Youtube/Youtube Music has) and would play that while I read.
zoeblank.bsky.social
In the years 2018-2019, I read something like 40 Star wars books. Basically everything in canon up to that point, and a fair handful of Expanded Universe books, too.

Consuming it in a timeline, as part of a larger universe and a (theoretically) larger story made it all possible.

So when my life went to Hell, so did the reading. Bohemian delusions dead. No career. No future. Just trying not to kill self. That's when Star Wars came in.
zoeblank.bsky.social
You, reader, have the pleasure of knowing how that was possible.

Not dramatic irony.

Something like it, I guess.

I was genuinely reading books and smoking cigarettes and drinking way too much coffee and alcohol and going to random cafes, any cafes. Reading in bars.

I remember reading "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" in a crowded Chili's bar with a drunk, slurring woman asking me how I did that.

Had a friend who would ask me if I read something and the answer was always no. I don't know where anyone found the time. I was just trying to get the basic big obvious authors out of the way so the other English majors wouldn't see me as a fraud.

But I enjoyed those books thoroughly.

In college, I learned to love it. I had a night audit job at a hotel that gave me the time. I read a whole bunch of Phillip K. Dick, Hunter S. Thompson, David Foster Wallace, Chuck Palahniuk, Vonnegut. Basically all that English major stuff I was behind on.

So I had the focus issues that made it hard to concentrate (possible adhd but I will never know because psychiatry let me down), and then a father that made me hate reading, and an education that made reading nothing but a chore. No wonder I hated it.
zoeblank.bsky.social
Because of that trauma (yes, forcing your 6th grader to read for countless hours with no reason or reward is abusive and causes trauma), on top of the focus issues, it creates this unease, these trip-like moments of eternity that make time an oppressive force when I try to read.
zoeblank.bsky.social
On top of that, my Dad would get a wild hair up his ass and make my brother and I read for hours on end, without any indication of when we were to stop. One of these times was when company was over. People laughing eating, having a party, I'm sitting there trying to read The Hobbit.
zoeblank.bsky.social
Outside of a couple different 1-2 years stretches in my life, I have always found reading anything longer than an article incredibly difficult. It's a focus issue. The words turn into alphabet soup, and you realize you've gone through the whole page without reading anything.
zoeblank.bsky.social
Reading is a luxury that not everyone can afford.

This can be economic, or related to accessibility, or a host of other issues.

We wouldn’t have the Star Wars books we have without Carol Titelman and Lucy Wilson getting it started and keeping it running when it mattered the most in the early years.

Random fun fact of the day - women are the reason #StarWars #publishing exists. And the reason it has been so successful that it could endure as it has for so many decades.

(I'm an expert on this stuff)

More importantly, I was a conservative at the time, and I came out of that movie thinking it affirmed my beliefs.

(I know conservatives have issues w/media literacy but I was well aware of how much art told me I sucked most of the time)

I absolutely love he and Gunn's Dawn of the Dead remake.

What I will say about Watchmen is that it is thoroughly entertaining - finger food, as you said - but...

I think that movie made me a soundtrack snob.

I love when his movies have nothing to say but also are kinda like "fascism is awesome" at the the same time
