It was a long day yesterday. Up at 6.30, four hours doing the zoo and then a 2-hour drive to a kingfisher hide. It was dull all day, but I'm sitting here culling over 300 images. My backlog keeps getting larger.

It's taken years to find a reliable hide, but even then, you can sit for hours without seeing one. Yesterday's bird stayed for so long at each visit that my entire body was screaming in pain. No fishing, but plenty of different poses. (100 down, 200 to go...) 😉

I've just sat down and now I need to cull over 300 kingfisher images. I already have too many, but I couldn't resist one last visit yesterday...

...As for lighter gear - this combination gives me that shallow depth of field, concentrating the eye on the subject. I do have a little bridge camera with a greater "reach", but there is no comparison. I'll go and probably sit on a tree stump waiting for the deer to come to me 😂

No question is ever silly. I use a professional 36MP Nikon D810, which alone, weighs a ton. The 600mm is a massive beast, but is necessary for birds. I do, however, use it over a bean bag on my open car window. Dragging them both round a park with a Manfrotto tripod looking for deer is tough...
