Smelly man in the swimming pool,
Where have you been?
Did you not have a shower before you got in?
There’s a waft of sweat and cigarettes when I overtake
And a suspicious tang of ammonia
That you’ve left in your wake. #poetry

Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

When did bitter disapear from pubs? When I first started going to pubs the chilled pumps were always lager, cider, stout, mild and bitter. What happened to the last two?

The word “migrant” is unecessary rage bait here and the BBC fucking know it. They’re pouring petrol on a fire.

Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness was released 30 years ago this week, so it’s a nice time to pull this piece I wrote for The Guardian back in 2015 out of the archive: www.theguardian.com/music/musicb...
Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, 20 years on
Billy Corgan took a risk by demanding his band’s third record be a double-album, but it went on to become the last great alternative-rock record of the 90s

OK there's my Unhinged Literary Opinion: Pratchett is the greatest humanist/philosophical writer of our era.
and since he really does have a quote for everything, in the wise words of Sir Terry Pratchett: “Susan hated Literature. She’d much prefer to read a good book.”

I honestly think Melanie’s new book is astonishing. I read the first half over three or four days, im not a fast reader, then I hit the mid-point when the revolution kicks in and couldn’t put it down again. I devoured the last 150 pages that day.
More lovely reviews of my new book about Marie Antoinette!

It's now officially available from all the usual places but if you're after a signed copy or can't wait for it to be released in America, I still have a few copies left that can be bought via us.
