1/3 You may be surprised that, until quite recently, many Europeans thought swallows hibernated @ bottom of ponds. Invasive techniques like banding set them straight, although maybe they knew long ago but got disconnected & forgot. Indigenous sciences have long understood bird migration

3/3 the suffix -si (or variant) for small animal. Zhaashaawanibisii is sometimes specific to Tree Swallow or used generically for all swallows. Charles wrote of joy of seeing swallows return, their Anishinaabemowin name acknowledging their migration from the south, as a sure sign of spring.
