Hitler sparked WWII by invading Poland #OTD in 1939, "justified" by false claims of persecution of ethnic Germans. On Sept. 17, the Soviet Union also invaded, a pre-arranged move from the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, leading to the country's swift defeat and division between the two powers by Oct. 6.
