The 1st round of the 1970-71 Fairs Cup pitted #Inter against #Newcastle United. A 1-1 draw in the 1st leg at the San Siro was followed by a 2-0 win for the Magpies in the return. Inter goalkeeper Ludo Vieri was sent off in the 1st half for apparently striking the referee in a melee!

Despite leading them to the #SerieA title in 1969, #Fiorentina sacked coach Bruno Pesaola after their 2-1 defeat to #Juventus on matchday 15 of the 1970-71 season with the Viola just two points off the bottom of the table. He was replaced by Oronzo Pugliese.

#Fiorentina signed striker Alessandro Vitali prior to the 1970-71 #SerieA season after he had impressed with 16 goals at #Vicenza the previous season. He struggled, scored just 6 goals for the Viola in the league, and was sold at the end of the campaign.

The first round of the 1970-71 #EuropeanCup pitted East German champions Carl Zeiss #Jena against Turkish league winners #Fenerbahce. The Germans claimed a 4-0 away win in the 1st leg in Istanbul to take control of the tie. They won 5-0 on aggregate. Here Vogel is denied by Turkish goalkeeper Datcu.

Ray Kennedy made just 4 appearances in the 1969-70 season, but became a key part of the 1970-71 #Arsenal squad forming a terrific partnership with John Radford. he scored 19 goals in 41 league games to finish as top scorer for the #Gunners

Armando Picchi was installed as the #Juventus coach for the 1970-71 season after impressing at Livorno and Varese. Sadly, a serious illness would mean he only took charge of 18 #SerieA matches before having to step down. He died in May 1971.

9 September 1970 West Germany's first post-World Cup match is a friendly against Hungary. The game served as Uwe Seeler's farewell match. Germany won 3-1 with Gerd Müller scoring twice to confirm the passing of the baton from one legend to another.
