Day 2, movie 5! “The Sleeping City” (1950).

A good one, really stark location shooting of 1950s NYC! Foster Hirsch, who introduced it, doesn’t buy Richard Conte as a young undercover doctor from LA, but who cares, Conte is great. Some genuinely tense scenes with very bleak undertones.

I remember how, before this game started, I thought, it'll be done around 11, I'll finish the dishes then, take out the trash, get in bed and maybe read for an hour. I was so much younger then

Movie no. 4, "Hell's Half-Acre" (1954).

Worth it for the 100% Hawaiian location shots. Don the Beachcomber is listed as technical advisor in the credits! Marie Windsor stands out, once again, as ever. The plot is a little loopy and Evelyn Keyes feels miscast but it's still a fun time at the movies.

Movie no. 3, “The Narrow Margin” (1952).

Perfectly executed B movie. Charles McGraw and Marie Windsor on a train for 70 minutes. What’s not to love?

One shot: a lobby card I have feat. the inimitable Windsor smoking a cigarette staring down McGraw. Bonus Robert Ryan/Hour of the Gun lobby card!

(A perfect shot from Raw Deal, for good measure.)
Claire Trevor side eyes her own reflection tensely in a clock on the wall

Movie no. 2, “Murder, My Sweet” (1944).

Often said Chandler movies feature plotting impossible to follow; in this movie as in The Big Sleep I actually think that’s more a help than a hindrance. The best scenes feel murky, vague, dreamlike (in this one almost literally so!).

One perfect shot:

Noir City DC 2025 thread.

Movie no. 1, “Raw Deal” (1948)

B movie masterpiece. Alton’s photography is so *mesmerizing* — you could watch this movie on mute and have a good time. Claire Trevor is all-time great, Dennis O’Keefe is pitch perfect in this, and Raymond Burr is sinister. Top ten for me!

This incessant fascination with how you spend your work hours. Like they watched the Bobs in Office Space and thought “Exactly!”

Musk himself often uses the “What would you say you DO around here?” line. The point is that that line and those consultants suck lol

News: Bari Weiss just sent a memo to staffers at CBS News asking them to produce a memo explaining "how you spend your working hours—and ideally, what you've made (or are making) that you're most proud of."

One CBS News staffer puts it like this to me: "We just got Elon Musked."
