At #ClimateWeekNYC we spoke with Rob about what it takes to build standards that last and why those lessons matter for carbon removal today.

"If the same group sets the rules and issues the certification, they’re both judge and jury. That system just doesn’t have credibility. You need a truly independent third party." — Rob Watson, the “Father of LEED”

Both parties are advancing a new model for carbon markets by separating the roles of standard-setting from credit recordation, combining science-based certification with institutional-quality solutions, and supporting transparency throughout the full credit lifecycle.

Absolute Climate and Northern Trust are working together to offer capabilities to support independent certification and lifecycle management for Digital Carbon Credits.

We’re continuing to grow and strengthen the Absolute Carbon Standard to bring greater trust and credibility to the carbon removal space. To support that work, we’re excited to welcome: Mike Brune to our Advisory Board, Grant Faber as Standards Lead, and Vaishnavi Kulkarni as Certification Manager.

What does it take to scale carbon removal? In a new piece with Nick van Osdol, our co-founders argue that permanence, MRV, and additionality are not hurdles. They’re what make gigatonne-scale removal possible. www.keepcool.co/p/how-to-sto...
How to stop undermining gigatonne scale carbon removal
Carbon removal won’t reach gigatonne scale by cutting corners. Standards like permanence and MRV are what unlock trust, investment, and lasting impact.

New Removed & Proved: Jack Andreasen

He explains why policy is critical to scaling CDR, why cheap credits are a dangerous illusion, and what it’ll take to build a credible market.

How carbon is removed is important, but how it’s tracked matters too.

Measured removals use sensors & provide greater certainty. Modeled removals rely on estimates and struggle to catch reversals.

Want higher confidence? Choose measured over modeled.

New blog series: Removed & Proved
We’re spotlighting the people shaping real, accountable carbon removal — starting with Erin Burns of Carbon180.

“The first thing we need is more alignment on what counts as carbon removal.”

Not all carbon removal credits are created equal.

Before you buy, ask: Does this credit actually deliver a negative emission?

Some remove CO₂ but fall short of net-negativity. If your claims rely on it, make sure your credits are fit for that use.

What questions are you asking before you buy?
absoluteclimate.bsky.social
This reflects a growing shift toward clearer, science-based frameworks in carbon removal.

It gives:
🛠️ Developers a way to differentiate their credits
🧪 Buyers a consistent approach to assess quality
📈 The market the tools to ensure credit claims match impacts

Let’s build better carbon removal, together.

What it covers:
- Net CO₂ removed across capture + storage
- Additionality and baselines
- MRV design and uncertainty
- Energy and material emissions
- Storage permanence + reversal risk
- Data transparency + review

Most methodologies were adapted from land-based offsets. This one starts with the science and systems behind DAC.

What makes it different:
🧠 Built for real DAC
⚖️ Comparable across CDR
🔍 Flexible, rigorous MRV
🛠 Shaped by experts across the field
absoluteclimate.bsky.social
We’re launching the first DAC + Storage methodology, built specifically for engineered carbon removal.
It aligns with the Absolute Carbon Standard (ACS) and sets clear criteria for net carbon removed, durability, and additionality. 🧵

The DAC + Storage methodology is open for public comment until June 12. Share your feedback directly on the document: absoluteclimate.notion.site/direct-air-c... or via email at: [email protected]

It’s the result of input from folks across the carbon removal world:
- Academics
- NGOs
- VVBs
- Registries
- Project Developers
- Storage Operators
absoluteclimate.bsky.social
Instead of forcing developers into a one-size-fits-all process, this methodology gives project developers the freedom to build MRV around their own tech while still meeting strict requirements.
absoluteclimate.bsky.social
It’s been developed using consistent, objective technical criteria under the Absolute Carbon Standard, designed to enable apples-to-apples comparison of removal credits across DAC, biochar, BECCS, and more
absoluteclimate.bsky.social
What’s different? Most methodologies focus only on their own tech pathway. This one doesn’t. Ours is built from the ground up to be comparable across all removal pathways.

Absolute Climate’s DAC + Storage methodology, built to align with the Absolute Carbon Standard and set a new bar for carbon removal integrity, is now open for public comment! Here's why it matters:
