No Kings coalition claims 10/18 was “the largest peaceful protest in American history” but the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, was the largest single-day protest in U.S. history, with an estimated 20 million participants. #NoKings @ashdashlee.bsky.social @maribelhernandez.bsky.social

It’s strange to hear @ezralevin.bsky.social say 10/18 #NoKings Day was the largest peaceful protest day in U.S. history while claiming 7 million people participated. The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, was the largest single-day protest in U.S. history, with an estimated 20 million participants.

UPDATE ON THE CROWD SOURCING ON CROWD COUNTS FOR 10/18:
As of 10/24 in the morning, we have public sources of 4,390,890. That’s from 1,327 events out of 2,785 events we currently know about. Which is less than 50%. If the median holds then that will be 5,557,290 participants. 🧵 #NoKings

UPDATE ON THE CROWD SOURCING ON CROWD COUNTS FOR 10/18:
We have public sources of 3,815,160. That’s from 1,311 events out of 2,783 events we currently know about. Which is less than 50%. If the median holds then that will be 4,991,960 participants.

It does not beats 2017 women’s March #NoKings 🧵

UPDATE on the crowdsourcing of crowd counts:
We have public sources of 2,315,988. That’s from 677 events out of 2,736 events we currently know about. Which is less than 25%. If the median holds then that will be 6,169,198 participants.
Which beats 2017 women’s March but doesn’t beat 1970 🧵 #NoKings

As of right now, we have public sources that show at least 2,333,343 people protested across the country yesterday.

If the averages hold, that will total 5,540,343 which would be the national record of the largest protester turn out in one day!

But we would like to solidify that 🧵 #NoKings

I think the last protest of the No Kings Day just wrapped up in Hawaii. So far we’ve been able to crowdsource public sources with crowd counts with 1,918,280 protesters.

We are obviously missing a lot.

If the averages we have stay true then there would be 4,211,280 total for all the #NoKings 🧵

What city, state? I'll add you to the list so you are counted as a protester today. Was anyone else protesting with you?
I’m chronically ill & caregiving for my dad who is recovering from surgery. ❤️‍🩹 I rode w/ my partner briefly to get a smoothie wearing my unicorn 🦄 onesie, bumped music🎵🎶 and danced w/ my giant stuffed frog the whole time. 🐸 Everyone in this red sea of hell got a friendly frog wave. 👋
I’m severely disabled. Today, I participated by wearing yellow in public. The No Kings coalition chose the color not me. Wearing coordinated colors is a type of action the Crowd Counting Consortium (CCC) includes in their dataset. For most people the closest public space is just off their property

Right now, the group I’m working with who are only including counts from public sources has 831,296 participants. If the averages stay the same that would come out to 2+ million.

The No Kings Coalition is going to announce 7 million as the estimate.

The No Kings Coalition said over 5 🧵

No Kings Day just begun in Guam!
While much of the mainland is still gearing up for No Kings Day, Guam has kicked off the first protest of the day; hours ahead of the rest of us, where it’s already Saturday morning!
This is what a nation rising in unity looks like. Guåhan, thank you!

I wish the No Kings coalition would have welcomed the We Count Project to the organizing table because they’re dropping the ball in crowd counting preparation & giving incorrect information about largest protest days. We asked them for 9 things & instead of engaging with us they left us out #NoKings

For the record: The most protests in one day in the USA was 4,470 in 2018 which was a student walk out. That was trump’s first term. I’m not sure where you’re getting your information but I got this from the Crowd Counting Consortium
The largest demonstration during Trump’s first term was around 750 events.

“We’re now expecting about 2,500 events around the country on No Kings. So we’re talking about literally four times as many.” - @leahgreenberg.bsky.social

Why demonstrations matter:loyalty shifts, policy changes, election results! Plant those seeds, drive onto those on-ramps, open those gates! The only thing more dangerous than overestimating the power of protest is underestimating it. Trump’s pushback proves these protests are working #50501 #NoKings
