This kaya (coconut jam) is the best thing I've ever made for colloquy. Like out of all the things I've made, this is the one I'm making again so I don't have to share.

Ten really hard things about Japanese, a thread

1. Never being *quite* sure when pronouns are clear from context

2. の or な? (Need to memorize for each word)

3. The sheer volume of vocabulary; anecdotally it feels like way more words are in common use

4. Pitch accent, "lol guess" edition

昨日日本人から日本語で「日本人ですか」という質問を受けましたが、その瞬間に日本語を忘れてしまって英語で答えなければいけませんでした😭

Wowowow listen to the way this 1945 Cantonese recording of 上 soeng5 / séuhng /sœ:ŋ˩˨/ realizes it soooo diphthongally, [se:ʊŋ˨˩]

(And is it just sentence level prosody or is it in a different tonal category?)

Non Chinese people are disproportionately amazed by these green beans. Like you know we have better stuff right?

Nguni languages write voiced clicks with a g, and I think that's a great way write them - to voice a click you really do just think really hard about the g

Who wants a hot take I predict that Maltese contrastive vowel length will turn allophonic (conditioned by stress and syllable structure) within our lifetimes 🫣

Academic writing should have more bulleted or numbered lists. We write lists! Let them be what they are which is lists!

Ten really hard things about German, a thread

1. drucken vs. drücken

2. der Druck, die Drucke vs. der Druck, die Drücke

3. der Teil vs. das Teil; bonus points for all the compounds

4. Konjunktiv I (who even uses this?)

5. die Punkte, which I always think is die Pünkte

Fractal recursivity on display with a non-linguist I know up here, lifelong Michigan resident with no Northern Cities Vowel Shift - he thinks the NCVS sounds firmly Canadian.

For colloquy I made a Korean tea with persimmons, cinnamon, and ginger. I hate all of those things. You gotta commit to the bit.
