I'm Allison, a freelance book editor for fantasy, sci-fi, and horror novels (I especially love dragons, foxes, and talking spaceships). Helping writers level up their manuscripts is my jam. 1/3
"Can I do X thing in my novel?" You can do anything you want! If doing X won't hurt anyone (for example, by promoting harmful stereotypes), the real question to ask is whether it's effective. Is the story engaging readers? Does it fit the genre and age category? Are YOU enjoying it? #WritingTip

There are 4 types of editing, and they should be done in this order:

1. Developmental editing (big-picture level)
2. Line editing (sentence level)
3. Copy editing (grammar)
4. Proofreading (last pass after layout is complete)
