Happy Birthday to Jean-Michel Basquiat, born on this day in 1960. I find myself mourning his death and imagining who he could have been if he hadn’t died in 1988. I believe his prolific art practice was him reckoning with his own mortality. (Portraits by James Van Der Zee, 1982)
