We're thrilled to introduce #Afronalia: A venture that seeks to reinforce the presence of—and interest in—African languages by bringing together mainstream design and the linguistic diversity of African languages through wearable, useable products.
Two models standing together, puffing up their cheeks with their eyes closed. They’re both wearing beanies. One of them is wearing a hoodie with the isiZulu words, “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” designed on the front. The other is wearing a hoodie with the name Igbo name “Amaka” designed on it, with its letters interspersed between what looks like a purple hibiscus flower. A model sitting with his arm propped coolly on his raised right leg. The shot has him pictured blowing bubble gum while wearing a soft, warm sweater with the Twi/Fante words, “Suro nipa na gyae saman” designed on it. A white clock with a black base that has words in place of the usual cardinal numbers. These words are cardinal numbers in Éʋegbe. A Christmas-themed season’s greetings card in Yorùbá. It is mostly dark green with golden insignia that implies some form of aristocracy. Printed on this card, in elegant text, is the greeting, “Eku Odun”.

Kɔsi and Kwashi are Éʋe and Gã variants respectively.
The Ndyuka people of Suriname/French Guiana also use Kwasi! #polyglot #kwasi

Kwasi is a masculine Akan day name for a child born on a Sunday.

The Baoulé name, Kouassi, in orange, is actually given to a child born on a Monday. This is due to historical factors related to their separation from the Asantes.

This week we found a nice similarity between a KiSwahili word and a Twi word. It’s so cool because these two languages are not AT ALL related!

Does this word appear in your language?

The KiSwahili word, nne, and the Twi word, nns, sound exactly the same. They're cross lingual homophones!

Swipe to see what they mean! The Kiswahili word, nne, means "four" while the Twi word, nns, means "today"

Hu M’ani So Ma Me Nti Na Atwe Mmienu Nam is a popular #Twi #proverb that conveys the importance of community/support. It loosely translates to, “Antelopes walk in pairs so they can do favors for each other”. We replaced “antelopes”(atwe) with “devils”(abonsam) for comic effect😅.

You wouldn’t believe how many African languages we found over time that had some variant of “ananas” for the word for “Pineapple”. Here are two languages that have a purely native name for the word: Xihenge and Àbarbá for #XiTsonga and #Hausa respectively!

"Kpera ye" is a Kpelle phrase that is often translated as "please". It is
more indicative of supplication than the English please. It can be used where the request is seen as unusual or serious, or to indicate persistence. Just like abeg!

We’re glad you appreciate it. We’re still doing research, based on our language resources(often native speakers) so we can learn more cool cross-lingual homophones!
