It's an old and obvious pattern. An unpopular president - failing on the economy and losing his grip on power at home - decides to launch a war for regime change abroad.

If the U.S. president is NOT a Russian asset in fact, he damn sure is in effect. Putin couldn't be happier. I'm running out of "gift" articles from the NYT, but I had to pull this together from Thomas Edsall's column a couple of days ago. The wrong direction in so many ways.
