The Australian earlier revealed the Hamas terrorist group seized on the Bondi massacre, portraying it as an act of solidarity with its terrorist cause and a justification for its efforts to murder Jews worldwide.
The group's official television channel, Al-Aqsa TV, published a post in the aftermath of the Sydney attack showing a picture of slain Rabbi Eli Schlanger during an October 2023 trip to Israel, where he met with Israeli soldiers.
The images, lifted from the Australian Jewish News, are accompanied by Arabic text saying Rabbi Schlanger met with the soldiers "to assist them in the war of annihilation".
Dr Ran Porat, a research associate at Monash
University's Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation, said Palestinian social media responses to the Sydney attack were consistent with the prevalence in the Arab world of Holocaust denial and distorted views on the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.
"What connects these phenomena is a lack of self-reflection and a refusal to take responsibility for the extremism that emerges from education and incitement," he told The Australian.
"Even more disturbing is the fact that these views are being echoed in Australia by fundamentalist preachers in mosques, in media outlets targeting Australian Arabs and Muslims, and within universities.
"The Australian authorities must crack down on individuals and organisations that spread such hate and conspiracy theories."

On the popular Palestinian Facebook site Ramallah
News, 75 per cent of hundreds of comments say Ahmed's lifesaving actions - lauded by world leaders including US President Donald Trump - amounted to a treasonous act because it saved the lives of Jewish Australians.
"Treason comes to you from the closest people" and "he sold himself and his life for the safety of the Jews" were among the comments, overwhelmingly posted by Palestinians.
"I wish it (the bullet) hit your heart," one commentator said, while another said "May Allah not heal you".
Ramallah News is one of the most popular Palestinian news sources, with millions of followers. It posted a news item about the terror attack in Bondi which drew more than 1000 comments, 30 per cent of which claimed Israel itself was behind the attack.
But it was the heroism of 43-year-old Ahmed, a Syrian-born Arab Muslim, which attracted the most criticism.
Melbourne man Ahron Shapiro, a senior researcher for Palestinian Media Watch who analysed the comments, said the "feel-good story" about Ahmed, who remains in hospital recovering from bullet wounds he sustained after disarming gunman Sajid Akram, was a bad news story for many Palestinians.
He said of the many hundreds of comments about Ahmed, 75 per were unsupportive or hostile, while around 20 per cent were supportive of him and 5 per cent neutral.

For months before the mass killing on Sydney's Bondi Beach, Australia had been afflicted by repeated incidents of anti-Jewish harassment and intimidation. The outrages began just two days after the October 7 Hamas terror attacks in Israel, with a demonstration at Sydney Opera House that included a chant of "Fuck the Jews." Dozens more such demonstrations have followed across the country.
Curses soon escalated into crimes. There was an arson attack on a synagogue and another at a daycare center. Protestors stormed into an Israeli restaurant, and police foiled a plot for mass casualty bombings of Jewish targets.
In September, a social media influencer carrying a Palestinian flag galloped a horse across Bondi Beach, and got off with a warning. "I cannot believe we can fine a cocker spaniel for being off leash, we can fine a restaurant owner for having a chair on a footpath, we can move people on for drinking in our public parks, but there is no power whatsoever for us to fine someone for riding a horse in an intimidating manner on a beach," Waverley Councillor Steven Lewis said at the time.
The beach, which is proximate to a large Jewish community, has been repeatedly targeted by pro-Palestinian demonstrators, leading to counter-protests and clashes.

After the mass killing in Sydney, it's not merely urgent to face reality-it's inescapable. Symbolic violence is a rehearsal for actual violence. Many in the western world have interpreted post-October 7 anti-Israel actions within the framework of free speech. Ten days after the terror attacks, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education posted a statement: "Let every participant in the debate over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict show their cards, even those with the most extreme views.
And let others marshal arguments and evidence to refute or discredit those views."
But what if the "extreme view" in question is that Jews should be made to fear death, and the best way to spread that fear is by killing them? How do you marshal arguments and evidence against that proposition?
In a 2021 essay, the prominent anti-Israel academic Steve Salaita rejected those who "speak of rights and democracy and civil liberties and then superimpose those categories onto Palestine. It doesn't occur to them that Palestine has its own vocabularies of freedom worth forcing into the American conversation."
It is helpful to possess a lexicon of what is often intended by these vocabularies. "Armed struggle" means shooting people or blowing them up with bombs. "By any means necessary" means targeting the most defenseless: children, the elderly, other civilians.
"Globalize the intifada" means shooting or bombing people in Sydney, London, Paris, Toronto, Los Angeles, and New York City, as well as in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.
"From the river to the sea" means the annihilation of a sovereign democratic state and the mass murder, expulsion, or enslavement of much of its population.

It's reasonable to surmise that what [the Bondi Beach killers] thought they were doing was
"globalizing the intifada." That is, they were taking to heart slogans like "resistance is justified," and
"by any means necessary," which have become ubiquitous at anti-Israel rallies the world over. For many of those who chant those lines, they may seem like abstractions and metaphors, a political attitude in favor of Palestinian freedom rather than a call to kill their presumptive oppressors.
But there are always literalists — and it's the literalists who usually believe their ideas should have real-world consequences. On Sunday, those consequences were written in Jewish blood.
History tells us that it won't be the last time.

The atrocity at Bondi Beach is horrific but not exceptional. It is a reprise of the murderous attack on Israelis by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and on Jews more widely since - including those attending the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Manchester on Yom Kippur two months ago. Especially for those of a younger generation whose recollections go back little further than this, the lineage of antisemitism bears stressing, across continents and generations.

Jews have played an integral, though still numerically tiny, part in Australian history since the first white settlers arrived on convict ships in the 1780s. They included Isaac Solomons, the model for Fagin in Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist. They stayed to build respectable lives in the country to which they had been involuntarily transplanted. Never have Jews formed much more than half a percentage point of Australia's total population. But numerical insignificance forms no protection against bigotry. It merely underlines the threat.
This is admittedly hard to explain to a generation that thinks of Israel as an oppressive, colonial enterprise. Since long before the Oslo accords more than 30 years ago, I've advocated, in Jewish publications and to every Jewish audience I address, that justice requires an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. But the corollary is that a sovereign Palestine must coexist with a secure Israel. And Israel is not safe when literally every Jew worldwide is a potential target for terrorists.
The founding of the state of Israel is a very recent development in international relations. It was regarded even in the 1930s by assimilated European Jews as a quixotic endeavour pursued only by ideologues. There remains a widespread misapprehension, held especially but not only on the left, that if only Israel could make peace with the Palestinians, then the proximate cause of antisemitic hatred could be extirpated. There is no truth in this delusion. And the Australian case shows why.
Those fanatics who purport to speak for the Palestinian national cause while urging sanctions and boycotts seek not peace with Israel but peace without Israel. Their variant of
"peace" is the stasis of the graveyard, where those Jews who have sought to make a life and preserve their heritage in the land of their ancestors are under daily assault. I can give only a partial account of what it seems like, from where I stand.

Freedom of Choice in the Face of Antisemitism
Before the Arab armies gathered to annihilate Israel, Améry still took the view that one should always adopt a clearly left-wing position when it comes to the question of political practice. He did not seem averse to defending the commitment to a cause, which might not be a genuine good cause yet but would, as opposed to others, seem to have the potential of one day becoming one.' As a left-wing intellectual and a Jew, however, he faced a crucial dilemma, which was why he could not freely decide on his commitment. Although the Vietnam War had the potential to escalate into a third world war at the time, for Améry, as for all Jews worldwide, the war over Israel was the existential one.
Already in 'On the Impossible Obligation to Be a Jew,' which can be read as a reflection on Jean-Paul Sartre's
1946 book Anti-Semite and Jew, Améry had dealt with the question of what it means to be a Jew. Because he had no positive connection to Judaism in his own life - he was not observant, did not grow up with Jewish traditions, knew neither Yiddish nor Hebrew - he spoke of the impossibility of being a Jew and deliberately avoided writing about his Judaism or his Jewishness.
Instead, he used the uncommon term 'Judesein' (German for 'being a Jew'). He could not escape it. The antisemites persecuted him as a Jew, no matter how he viewed himself, no matter what he said, and no matter what he did. What united him with all Jews - whether religious or not, whether they were aware of it or not - was the threat of the 'death sentence. [8] This threat, an acute one, constituted the obligation to be a Jew.

In Sartre's work as well, 'the Jew' is defined as someone whom others regard as a Jew and who has to act and live accordingly. What is central to the French existentialist's philosophy, however, is the possibility of choice. Sartre assumes that all people have the freedom to choose. He distinguishes, without any value judgment, between the 'authentic' Jew, who 'is the one who asserts his claim in the face of the disdain shown toward him,' and the 'inauthentic' Jew, who denies his reality and 'has succumbed to the myth of the "universal human being.""[10] According to Sartre, Jews can recognise that the world is ill-contrived and choose to do whatever they think is right to do.
Améry criticises this view of Sartre, whose work significantly influenced his own thinking after Auschwitz, and refutes the notion of a Jewish freedom of choice: 'I am at liberty to choose myself as a Jew, and this liberty is both a uniquely personal and universal human privilege. Or so I am told. Do I really have this freedom? I believe not.'[11]
Sartre's error was that 'in his short phenomenological outline, he was unable to offer a comprehensive account of the crushing pressure exerted by antisemitism and its ability to cajole the Jews into acquiescence. In fact, I suspect that the great author never fully grasped its irresistible force.' Améry is pointing out that Sartre overlooks the qualitative change in the situation of the Jews as a result of the Shoah. For Jews at that time, the world was an opposite world - death was the rule, life an anomaly. [13]

Because 'the world was content with the position the Germans had assigned to us,'[14] Jews could no longer depend on the goodwill of others as a vital condition for survival. According to Améry, being a Jew not only means bearing within me the catastrophe that has occurred and may conceivably recur, but also that
'[e]very day anew, I lose my trust in the world ... human rights declarations, the democratic constitutions, the free world and free press - all this seems too good to last. Nothing can lull me into the sense of security again of which I was disabused in 1935.' When the matter is put to the test, it is not human rights or democratic constitutions that protect against antisemitism, but physical defence alone. That is why Jewish sovereignty is so important to Améry: a state with an army.
For him, the existence of the Jewish state is also crucial because it means that Jews no longer have their self-image impressed on them by the antisemite:
It is the country where the Jew is not a usurer but a farmer, not a pale stay-at-home but a soldier, not a wholesale merchant but a craftsman. Thanks to the state of Israel, the Jews in the Soviet Union and the United States, in France and wherever else the winds of the diaspora may have taken them, have grasped that they are human beings like all others

However, for Améry the Jewish left-wing intellectual is not free in his choice - which is not actually a choice - with regard to Israel. He is dependent on the Jewish state that guarantees him potential refuge. If this place of shelter is threatened with extinction, there is no alternative but to 'commit' oneself to Israel.

Regardless of whether we are entirely of Jewish extraction or not, whether we are religious or totally assimilated atheists, now that Israel is under threat, those of us who have been compelled to recognise that we bear the Jewish lot have been expelled from the community of which we were a part only yesterday .... Since hostile armies have massed around Israel, since the most forthright voices in the Arab lands have let it be known that the small country should be turned into a large concentration camp, since there is talk of driving the Israelis into the sea, [the Jewish left-wing intellectual] is no longer a leftist intellectual but merely a Jew. [18]
The 'authenticity' schooled by Sartre, to which Améry refers in the last sentence of 'Between Vietnam and Israel,' is not one in the sense of the jargon of authenticity, but in the sense of precisely this sentence: '... merely a Jew.' According to Améry's own idiosyncratic existentialism, authenticity is a negative one - existing only in relation to the death threat. While in the mindset of the racist or the misogynist, the objects of hate still have a place in the world, which they must not leave, for the antisemite Jews, seen as the cause of all evil, have no such place at all.

And Rich, director of policy at the Community Security Trust, in a complex and detailed analysis of the thinking behind present-day anti-Zionism and antisemitism, had a simple and chilling answer.
"If we strip away the political sloganeering and academic ambiguities, it is a plot to kill a nation. That's it. Anti-Zionism is a campaign, across decades and continents, to kill the nation of Israel, erase its name and its national identity from history, and replace it with something non-Jewish...Anti-Zionism is utterly unique, and fundamentally anti-democratic."

proposed New York state law to protect synagogues from angry demonstrations with a 25-foot buffer zone signals a defeat for American Jewry. Indeed, the mere introduction of such legislation is an admission that incoming mayor Zohran Mamdani has already inaugurated bleaker times for the city…

One Jewish activist asked a protester why she was there, and the protester responded: "We are protesting in front of a site that holds genocide supporters, and they are trying to bring it to K-town."
In other words, synagogues and the Jews inside them are fair game because Jews are "genocide supporters." Suddenly everyone's an "international law" enforcer. The Mamdani logic makes every Jew a valid target.
I recently spent a week in Greece, and traveling to Jewish establishments in Europe is always eye-opening. The level of security required to, for example, eat in a kosher restaurant or pray in a synagogue is a reminder of Europe's dark past and the dark future many there seek to bring about.
Mamdani is in the process of nudging New York City in that direction: Now, apparently, Jews seeking to worship in Gotham need a buffer zone.
It should be noted that it is a violation of civil-rights law to prevent people from entering a house of worship. That is because such behavior is a direct assault on the First Amendment.
Though Mamdani has exacerbated the problem, he did not create it. Even before his lies about
"international law," the protest itself shattered civic norms. The result is a proposed law on top of a law.
And that law might pass and it might make going to shul safer. But what kind of society needs such a law?

Ireland is a case study in the futility of trying to distinguish anti-Zionism from anti-Semitism. Discussions about Israel aren't marked by criticism of the contemptible Netanyahu government nor philosophical dispute with the moral claims of Zionism.
It's unhinged fixation, righteous fury, and an invincible credulity towards even the most dubious accusations, provided the finger is being pointed Zionwards. Some of the discourse wouldn't be out of place at Friday prayers in Tehran.
It's wild. They've thrown off every yoke of state Catholicism except the keen interest in perfidis Judaeis. Israel is the ultimate malefactor of the Irish imagination, the bogeyman of Dublin politics and Dublin media, and a national myth posits the republic as a modern-day David taking on Goliath, when most Israelis would struggle to locate Ireland on a map and the rest think it's still part of Britain. Mind you, the tendency of its activists and ideologues to declare themselves 'Paddystinians' makes sense. Palestine is the only occupation the Irish left shows an interest in anymore.

Dublin already boycotts Israeli academics and leads Europe in anti-Israel UN resolutions. The Israeli embassy in Dublin has been closed by Israel over the extreme anti-Israel policies of the Irish government. Israeli officials now call it, without fear of contradiction, the antisemitic capital of Europe.
This is not about a park. It is about whether Ireland still believes its Jewish citizens belong. If Herzog's name does eventually fall, something larger falls with it; the claim that the Republic is an inclusive nation, rather than a monocultural tribe in progressive clothing. A country that erases the memory of the man who liberated Belsen while polishing the statue of the man who courted Hitler has chosen which side of history it wishes to stand on.

X, Irish Jewish pro-Israel activist Rachel Moiselle said the city council "has made an antisemitic decision to change the name of Herzog park, a blatant attempt to erase Irish-Jewish history."
"Ireland is an institutionally antisemitic country," she said.
"To deny it in the face of such overwhelming evidence is pure folly."
Israel says Ireland's anti-Israel stance has frequently veered into blatant antisemitism. Recent research has also found disturbing levels of antisemitic beliefs among large swathes of the population.
Last month, Ireland elected as president far-left lawmaker Catherine Connolly, who has referred to Israel as a "terrorist state."

The predictable antizionist mantra claims "antizionism is not antisemitism." The mantra is right: antizionism is not classical antisemitism. But it misses the point: antizionism is itself a powerful form of Jew Hatred. It is different in form, but identical in function.
Antizionism, just like antisemitism, is a hate movement that obsessively repeats popular libels about Jews to justify killing them. This cycle of libel leads to violence against Jews - and also against Palestinians, who are repeatedly sacrificed on the altar of its ideology and its endless wars.
To understand antizionism, we must first understand that Jew-hatred is a structural feature of monotheistic cultures. It takes on various forms, but its ancient cycle persists: anti-Jewish libels and conspiracy theories stigmatize Jews and lead to violence, which is then denied.

To be clear, none of this makes Jews safer. Indeed, the opposite:
It is normalizing the idea that Jews cannot be protected at a soccer match, at the theater, at a concert, and wherever else they might want to gather. This, in turn, makes everyone less safe because it makes violence the most effective tactic to determine which cultural events are allowed and which are not. It's an
invitation to anarchy. As always, anti-Semitism is the gateway drug to the complete collapse of societal norms.

Two sentences, two exclamation points from the government representative after his petition to ban fans of the Jewish team was successful. Of course, the Gentleman from Birmingham didn't do this all on his own: he owes a debt of gratitude to the Jew-hunters of Amsterdam and the Yom Kippur killer and the Islamic "scholars" who call for mob violence with impunity...while some comedian gets arrested at Heathrow for making fun of a trans person on Twitter.
To review: a member of Parliament called for Maccabi fans to be banned from a soccer match because violent antiSemites didn't want them there. He then celebrated when his demand was honored by the local police. What kind of country does this sound like?
Not all of Britain's leaders have lost their minds or their souls just yet.
"This is a national disgrace," posted the Conservative opposition leader Kemi Badenach. She added that if it stands, the decision "sends a horrendous and shameful message: there are parts of Britain where Jews simply cannot go."
A fan of the home team pronounced himself "appalled" as well, and then made a very good point to the Telegraph: "Birmingham is one of the venues for the European Championship in 2028, but the police's decision must surely put that at risk if they are saying they can't guarantee public safety."
The fan's logic is sound, but there's a hitch: The police aren't really saying they can't guarantee public safety. They are really saying that they won't guarantee public safety. You just have to listen carefully to hear it.

Faraj al-Shamie, the Manchester attacker's father, posted his support for the events of Oct 7 on Facebook
Mr Shamie, the killer's father, arrived in the UK from Syria in the 1990s, settling in the Crumpsall area of north Manchester, which is home to a large Jewish population.
He had qualified as a doctor in Syria and completed further studies in the UK, before becoming a trauma surgeon. He is thought to be currently overseas, working as a doctor.
