The legendary beasts were originally a lot less detailed. Suicune’s design in particular led to a lot of people joking that it looked like a certain… thing from a certain anime. #Pokemon #DigitalArt #BetaMon #IbisPaintX
Warwolf is the evo to Wolfman. Both of which were slowly phased out and replaced with the Tyranitar line. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
Gligar originally looked extremely similar to facehuggers from the Alien movies. Its red and black palette would later be given to Scizor. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
The evo to Rinrin, Bellurun. Its space in the dex was ultimately replaced with dunsparce. It might’ve been cut for looking too similar to Sailor Moon’s cat. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
Girafarig originally had a pre evolution, Twinz. It’d undergo multiple redesigns, even a design that looks more like Girafarig. Ultimately, it was taken from Girafarig and turned into wobbuffet. #Pokemon #IbisPaintX #BetaMon #DigitalArt
Like Delibird, Murkrow originally had a more apparent hat on its head. To go with its witch broom tail, it had a witch hat. At some point, Murkrow would be turned away from its witch inspiration and embraced by more mafia theming with Honchkrow in Gen 4. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
When Zubat and Golbat were introduced in Gen 1, it was supposed to be a 3 stage line like it ended up being in Gen 2. The difference being instead of an evo after golbat like crobat, it had a pre evolution for zubat. The only proof for its existence is a back sprite. #Pokemon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
Ariados’s origins have been disputed for years. Multiple people have came out and claimed they invented it for a contest. Ariados originally kept the back face that spinarak has except a little scarier of course. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
When the Kurusu line was cut, a small crocodile gator rose to the occasion to take their place. Totodile’s design would later get more simplified into its final design. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
For whatever reason, GF at one point thought it was a good idea to give Ditto an evolution. Animon, similar to Scizor, would’ve been obtained by evolving Ditto with a metal coat. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
Gen 2 had a lot of odd candidates to give pre evolutions to, Paras being one of them. Para here was actually pure bug, so the mushroom it’s housed in hasn’t quite infected it yet. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
Sawsbuck had two major beta designs. This is the original as far as we know. Its antlers somewhat resemble those of the final spring form except more curved and pointy. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
Despite this looking smaller than Chansey, this is actually the beta version of it’s evo, Blissey. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
As far as we know, it was the only form of sawsbuck at the time. Summer sawsbuck and autumn sawsbuck were probably built on this design though. This is actually the second version of sawsbuck GF made. The original design had antlers closer to the spring form.

I believe it was changed to Bug/Steel at the same time as Scizor; it just got changed to Forretress pretty soon after that.
Correction:Plucks was pure bug not bug/steel
Scyther and Pinsir were originally counterparts in gen 1. When Scyther got an evo in gen 2, Pinsir was also supposed to get one. Plucks was Bug/Steel while original Scizor was still Bug/Flying. It’s theorized that Plucks was reworked into Heracross. #Pokemon #BetaMon #IbisPaintX #DigitalArt
The whole hoppip line was based on cats. It’s obvious in hoppip, but final jumpluff doesn’t retain a lot of the cat features. Beta Jumpluff was way more cat like with the ears and the long tail. Hoppip would eventually take the pink palette from Jumpluff. #Pokemon #BetaMon #IbisPaintX #DigitalArt
Although it can’t be seen in this picture, beta Mantine did still have a “face” pattern on its back except it was a bit more “cat like” and not a smiley face. Beta Remoraid is also featured here in its more gun like appearance. #Pokemon #BetaMon #IbisPaintX #DigitalArt
Octillery originally had a more obvious tank referenced design that got lessened as it got reworked into the final. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
Aqua and the rest of the Kurusu line were scrapped in favor of Totodile. GF later revisited the concept of a seal esque starter with Popplio. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
Pikachu and Meowth were seen as rivals in the series. When Pichu was created, Meowth also followed suit and got a pre evolution called Koonya. Unfortunately, Meowth’s pre evo got cut. #Pokemon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX #BetaMon
Aipom originally had a more human like tail hand. Aipom was also reworked to be a little more simple especially with its face. Its original Spaceworld sprite also showed it might’ve been intended to be quadrupedal. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaintX
In the very early stages of Gen 2, the Xatu Line had a middle stage. #Pokemon #BetaMon #DigitalArt #IbisPaint
Purrloin wasn’t the first dark cat line to be thought up. In beta gen 2, there was the Rinrin line. It was probably ultimately cut after Umbreon was retyped and recolored which made it look too similar to Rinrin’s evo. #Pokemon #DigitalArt #BetaMon #IbisPaintX
