I didn't wake at 3:30 a.m. today to head to the airport and catch a flight to Pennsylvania. But some Ducks fans did. Many more will in the next 36 hours. Here's my story about the extra effort it takes to get from the West Coast to this Saturday's Penn State game:

A 4-year-old girl is hurt when another skier lands on top of her at an Oregon ski resort. Lawyers file a $4.6M lawsuit on her behalf. And Oregon's ski industry nervously watches, saying a flood of lawsuits is putting their ability to stay insured at risk. My story: www.oregonlive.com/living/2025/...

My story today: I had what might best be described as a stunning experience shopping at Costco during its new 9 a.m. opening hours for Executive members. I am so used to crowds on the weekends, which is when I normally shop, but this was strikingly different.

Bizarro world: I went to Costco at 9 a.m. during new store hours and it was bliss
Costco stores in Oregon and across the U.S. are now allowing early entry to members who pay more. The store I visited was virtually empty.

The city of Portland has paid nearly $1 million to a young woman and the then-9-year-old boy she was babysitting. I wrote about this lawsuit when it was filed 16 months ago and tracked it to its recent resolution. My story today: www.oregonlive.com/portland/202...

The child, then 9, suffered a fractured skull and the sitter a crushed pelvis. The city replaced hundreds of its lampposts after the incident.

Portland's ombudsman wants the city to crack down on a tow company that is, according to a report, charging a median of about $1,900 per towed vehicle. But a recommendation to do so appears to be running into resistance from city transportation officials. My story: www.oregonlive.com/portland/202...
$1,900 per tow in Portland? Transportation officials don’t plan to negotiate lower towing fees despite recommendation
The ombudsman wants all tow companies that police call to charge a lower, city-negotiated rate. But that request has been rebuffed.

It was a touching show of support. Dozens of representatives in the Oregon House yesterday wore masks as one of their own, Rep. Hòa Nguyễn, returned to the chamber floor after a months-long absence. She is fighting cancer. My story: www.oregonlive.com/politics/202...
In solidarity with just-returned colleague with cancer, most Oregon House members wear masks to protect her health
Friday marked the first day Rep. Hòa Nguyễn voted in a floor session since February.
