I’m a metal fabricator by vocation with occasional sculpture sales too.

I studied metal sculpture at University of Oregon with instruction by Paul Buckner, Laura Alpert, Frank Okada & others.

My sub-studies included bronze-casting, figurative studies, drawing, psychology & philosophy.

It’s being reported that the Reverend Jesse Jackson has passed away.

He visited the University of Oregon in 1993 to encourage voting I believe.

I took these photos as a reporter for Oregon Voice Magazine.

Anyone enjoy Oregon campus photos from the 90’s?

The Reverend Jesse Jackson visited campus and gave a speech on the EMU lawn around 1993.

Here he is exiting Carson Hall before speaking, surrounded by campus reporters & others.

Will repost originals when I find ‘em.

“Thrift Store Gallery”

Anyone recognise this bay or the type of fishing boats?

It can be difficult to date & place tourist art. This looks maybe 1940’s era judging by the frame. Perhaps a WWII era souvenir?

Measures about 10” x 16”. I think it’s oil paint.

Any suggestions on the signature?

“Thrift Store Gallery”

I’ve shopped thrift stores & charity shops for decades looking primarily for vintage furniture & art.

Tourist paintings by “Gill” depict a cable-car turnaround on Powell & Market and the San Francisco Japanese Garden.

Likely painted in the 1950’s.

Measures 15” x 29”

I’m interested in this mostly for the black & white / “noir” format and also for what I imagine will be a classic Nic Cage performance.

It’s raining today.
Felt like a good day to work on a project.

Built this rustic bench this morning with some 5/8” steel rod and a couple sections of recycled Doug Fir or similar.

Measures:

42” long
16” deep
15 1/2” tall

I’m thinking of getting back into building furniture if there’s interest.

Anyone else annoyed & frustrated with all the…

“BUY 3…GET 2 FREE” nonsense?

Like, why can’t I just buy 1 for an affordable price?

I’m seeing a lot of this pricing scheme around. Wondering if it mean grocers are sitting on lots of about-to-expire inventory that’s not moving?

I don’t watch this series but I love old world design and my family hails from Yorkshire.

I’d live in a house like this today. Very thoughtful and artistic production design.

I’ve shared this before.

If you’re a fan of special effects, Superman or spaceships, this deleted, opening scene from Superman Returns (2006) is worth a watch especially on a large screen.

I love how the Krypto-ship is “honest” to the original.

In “The Case of the Cheating Chancellor“ Perry Mason visits his former fraternity. In real life, Chi Beta Sigma is a sorority founded in 1946 at Utica College in NY.

The alma mater law school is unnamed and isn’t in Los Angeles.

A “Garden Gate” penant in a dorm suggests “Garden Gate University”.

Recently, I learned this disc with stamping is likely a World War I dog tag.

“JOHN TOWNSEND U.S.A.
75775”

It’d been in a small box of second-hand, mixed foreign coins I was given 40 plus years ago.

Many men with this name served.
The service number is seemingly 75775.

Would like to return this.

Yesterday, I found this piece of salt-glazed stoneware or similar in a molehill.

I frequently find bits of glass & small relics from past inhabitation on my small acreage.

Comparing this shard to other ceramics I’d guess the original whatever was 10” to 12” across (assuming it was circular).

I was watching Perry Mason’s “The Case of the Wrongful Writ (1965) and recognized a familiar face in actor James Shigeta.

Only 23 years later he would portray Mr. Takagi, the chief executive at Nakatomi Plaza in Die Hard (1988).

I’ve kept goldfish on & off since I was a kid. The earliest fish we had were prizes won at the county fair.

I’ve had the current batch about 20 years. I buy new ones sometimes. I’ve also seen some born naturally in my pond(s).

One of my favourite fish “Sleepy” has red eyes.

Outside but contained!

Karen Keltz is a writer, blogger & artist. She was also my HS english teacher, drama coach, & instructor for college prep courses.

Many folks have fond memories of English teachers. Written & spoken words are the most powerful tools in existence.

My HS art teacher John Widder taught me a lot just by example. He’s been teaching, creating art across the globe for 35 years.

Once a ceramic pot I was throwing accidentally got dented. I saw it as a loss, but John wisely said “Looks cool! Add more!”

Influences & Mentors

Don Levi was the faculty/guidance counselor assigned to me when I came to UO in ‘91.

Only met once in that capacity. Took several philosophy & logic classes from him later.

Don taught me to never wait more than 15 mins for someone to show up.

Dora Natella was a University of Oregon faculty member in sculpture the 1995/1996 school year.

I recall taking a special full-day, full-body casting seminar with her.

I took this “in-action” photo of her hard at work beside the bronze foundry one day.

Paul Buckner served as instructor for many Figure Studies classes I took at U of O in the ‘90’s.

One of the things I recall Paul saying was that a good sculpture should be interesting from all sides and angles.

Critique day was my fave.
