Cars brought a new kind of independence and freedom to travelling. Gallen-Kallela designed the Bil-Bol advertisement for the Stockholm car show. The commissioner of the work, poet and businessman Yrjö Weilin, was a friend of the artist. He owned a red open car, and took Gallen-Kallela for rides in it. This work builds on the theme of the capture of the maiden from the Kalevala in a more modern way, with the sleigh changed into a car. The powerful advertisement was shameless in reaching out to its target group: the city-dwelling forerunners of their time. In later times, cars and beautiful women have been irrevocably combined in car advertising.
