Growing up in the 80's it was one of those extremely weird but compelling films that would pop up on cable, like Lynch's Dune, and for a certain kind of nerdy kid watching it was like being on drugs. That feeling created a lot of nostalgic good will.

I lost most of mine after Legacy, though.

But given the production cycle of most of these movies, I somehow doubt Disney was counting on America being in a trade war with most of Asia and losing out on that market.

Plus, a lot of these movies have become loss leaders for the associated merchandising that accompanies them. If it breaks even internationally, then the real profit is toys and tie-ins.

Then again, this could be somebody's passion project whose time has come. I'm sure we'll learn in time.

I think that reaction to Lawnmower man is what some people have for Tron. Almost certainly too few people to justify the expense of a new mega-movie, but I'm not sure how you'd do Tron on a budget.

It may also be a measure of Disney's desperate need to exploit old IP that they're digging it up.

Three years ago Mega Knockdown was in early access with placeholder art and no plans (or money) to add proper character sprites. Then @mrmkl.bsky.social , @flynnjeux.bsky.social and @thatpunk.bsky.social organized an event called the "Niche Fighter Fete" to raise some money for new art..

When I started to learn about 3 act story structure I did a breakdown on Tron Legacy.

If there was ever a script that suffered because it failed to establish a well defined motivation for its lead, this was it.

I don't even think Garret Hedlund was bad, he just had bugger all to work with.

There are standards for script length and format. You're trying to hit a page count and you've got to satisfy the demands of a story. It explains why these things become formulaic sometimes. If you're trying to crank something out within the confines of the form, you lean on what has worked before.

I struggle with it. I'm a graphic artist and print specialist by trade and slip streamed into making video game art on the side and that seems to satisfy both urges, though I rarely make anything purely for fun anymore.

Its an interesting exercise, if for no other reason than that it gives you a glimpse into what making a movie/TV show must be like at the ground level.
