Meanwhile, for as long as the Labor Govt refuses to appoint a dedicated, stand-alone LGBTIQA+ Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission, they are effectively saying homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and anti-intersex prejudice are not as serious as other forms of discrimination. 3/

The Labor Govt broke their 2022 election promise to protect LGBTQ+ students & teachers in religious schools, & voluntarily handed a veto on this issue to the Coalition, who already showed they have zero interest in passing laws of this kind.

Meaning vulnerable LGBTQ+ kids & workers are screwed. 2/

Two good questions from Greens LGBTIQA+ spokesperson Nick McKim at Attorney-General's Dept Estimates on Tuesday.

And of course, there are no good answers to either, because the Labor Govt's position on both lacks principle.

Senator McKIM: Faith based discrimination. In all states and territories, laws currently protect LGBTQI+
students, staff and clients from discrimination in faith based schools and services. Last year, the Australian Law
Reform Commission recommended similar protections at a national level. The government, in my view, quite
bizarrely and unreasonably claimed that it needed bipartisan support before moving forward with such a
protection at a national level, even though anyone observing the parliament knows the numbers would be there to
pass such protections at a national level without the support of the opposition. Is that still the government's
position? If it is, could you explain why you have taken that position, given the disarray in which the opposition
currently finds itself?

Senator McKIM: Thanks, Minister. On another matter, the Australian Human Rights Commission has
dedicated commissioners for sex, age, race, disability, children, human rights and Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander social justice but not an LGBTIQA+ commissioner. The government has also, as you'd obviously be
aware, appointed special envoys for antisemitism and Islamophobia. There's rising hate and violence against
queer folk—LGBTIQA+ people—in this country. And some subgroups of that minority population are being
weaponised in political and culture wars—including by some in this parliament, I might add. Why is the
government not moving forward with appointing an LGBTIQA+ human rights commissioner, and why does a
cabinet that has a number of portfolios dedicated, quite rightly, to the needs of minority populations in Australia
not include a minister for LGBTIQA+ folk?

Just kidding - of course he doesn't.

What it does mean though is that he is a hypocrite, who supports protections for one set of beliefs or identity (religion) while opposing another (gender identity). For no apparent reason other than transphobia. 2/2

It's seems like Chris Merritt has a problem with laws that protect the rights of people on the basis of their beliefs, including about themselves.

I guess that means he opposes religious freedom and discrimination laws too then... 1/2

No, they're not the same thing - but many of our experiences of discrimination share deep similarities.

And the same people who are targeting trans people now, will come after same-gender attracted people too.

Oh, and trans people have been involved in the fight for equality since the beginning.

This sentence is just bizarre: 'After the LGB movement won the end of structural discrimination, the T & the Q were added, & queer theory found a home in legacy LGB orgs.'
