40 BOOKS IN ROMAN HISTORY WRITTEN BY WOMEN

A killer reading list of great books (and personal favorites!) in Roman History to celebrate #InternationalWomen'sDay 2025.

Limited to English (to keep it manageable!) and listed in order of publication.

Let's go!

“This is nice behaviour, that I write to you again and again, and you pay no attention to me.”

This almost 4,000-year-old Babylonian letter in clay is proof that we have been finding ways to say “per my last email” for some time
Photo of the front and sides of a clay tablet that is a light grey colour with some darker discolouration patches throughout. It preserves around 15 lines of cuneiform text visible on the front and partially on the sides as well. The background is black
Oops I slipped and fell into a bookshop 🙊

We all need a timeline cleanse right now...

An adorable #Greek rhyton in the shape of a cow's head. Vessels such as this one were used in drinking parties. Since they didn't have a base, the content had to be consumed before the vessel could be put down

Dating ca. 460 BC

A dog’s paw print on a Roman clay tile 🐾🐕 😍

This imprint was made about 2,000 years ago, when a dog walked across the wet clay tile as it lay out to dry before firing.

Perhaps not such a good boy?😂
