I give myself about a decade before I move to the equator
Is that a Vasnetsov Madonna I spy on the wall?
Raking the leaves outside until my neighbors call the police
By the time I got home from work at 6:15 it was well and truly dark, like middle of the night dark. I would just like to know how I'm expected to operate under these circumstances
The fact that this happens every year is unacceptable
Thankfully my sounds are not actual knocking noises, just the building itself adjusting (I've been on many old buildings whose radiators badly needed bled)
They're extremely loud but that's because I have no rugs down at the moment (on account of floor refinishing)
Radiant heat is great for many reasons (maybe best even), as long as you don't mind earth-shattering noises emanating all night from the bowels of your house as various beams and joists contract and expand from 170°F pipes
There are lots of caves to dwell in if you hate the sun
It's dark now forever. We will die in this darkness. Six months ago this time felt like late afternoon. Now it’s 1 AM. This variance is intolerable. Something must be done.

A poem for All Souls’ Day from Jane Kenyon

Friends, the gilded ballroom offers us a foretaste of heaven, where the dance of Trinitarian love will gleam in streets of gold and there will be no poor people
I am a fan of Hallowe'en. One of the only cool things we do in this country
Glad that they have enjoyed, and in so symmetrical a fashion
Something gnawed at my jack o'lantern's eyes overnight and made it look spookier
And how my thoughts at this time of year turn inward to long dormant mental projects and reading forgotten books and the categorization of things that I possess, until the warmth of next spring when they will thaw and expand and turn outward again more generously into the blossoming world
Looking over the city and all the homes within it, and all the warm enclosed spaces in which my dear friends and many unknown people reside, and the endless suffering and the death of nature without, and how this death has happened and will continue to happen even long after the city is gone
Trying to remember what it was like to sit out on my porch in the summer evening
You could also just slap some devil horns on while wearing the SS uniform and at least your intention would be a little bit more clear (if still inappropriate). But yes, the more accurate it is the more someone rightfully assumes that you own that thing for something other than Halloween use
Also: it would be interesting to see how Nazism is understood in 250, 500 years; I can't think of any historical empire or group whose outrages and atrocities are remembered in such black and white moral terms today (the Huns?) — but that's because there are still living victims of Nazism
