Breaking: per internal sources, the entire Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), including OSEP and RSA beneath them, was RIFed last night at the Department of Ed. Developing story. DoEd union says may take 1-2 days for all affected employees to receive official notice.

These are not budget cuts. This isn’t about money; this is an attempt to undermine congressional intent and dismantle the Department by making it incapable of carrying out its statutory duties.

Please call (don’t email) your representatives, and keep calling every day until this is stopped.

We’ve now heard that most of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) at ED is being let go as well. The harm caused to students if these layoffs are allowed to proceed cannot be overstated. ED cannot carry out its statutorily required duties without these offices.

When hundreds of Department of Education employees are suddenly terminated, students bear the brunt of the consequences.

Special education oversight. Grants to high-need schools. Protection of civil rights.

Gone.

This administration is destroying our education system from the inside out.

We are hearing that almost all of the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) has been let go. This is devastating news for both the employees, who are being treated as nothing more than political pawns, and for K–12 education in this country—both deserve better.

"When you fire the professionals, the statisticians, the scientists that can analyze the data, that allows you to make up whatever facts you want,” Ms. Smith said. @altdepted.bsky.social @alt-deptofed.bsky.social @standupforscience.bsky.social

"The data provides a variety of detailed information on every college, including faculty-to-student ratios, the cost of tuition and the average amount of financial aid. “The goal is to help potential students make better decisions,” Dr. Kelchen said."

While Kristi Noem’s out here blaming everyone but herself, here’s her own April press release bragging about clawing back $882M in disaster resilience grants. The kind that could’ve helped in Texas. They’d rather wage culture wars than actually protect human lives.
FEMA Ends Wasteful, Politicized Grant Program, Returning Agency to Core Mission of Helping Americans Recovering from Natural Disasters
Release Date: April 4, 2025
Under Secretary Noem, DHS is eliminating waste, fraud and abuse
WASHINGTON - FEMA is ending the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program and canceling all BRIC applications from Fiscal Years 2020-2023. If grant funds have not been distributed to states, tribes, territories and local communities, funds will be immediately returned either to the Disaster Relief Fund or the U.S. Treasury.
Statement Attributable to a FEMA Spokesperson:
"The BRIC program was yet another example of a wasteful and ineffective FEMA program. It was more concerned with political agendas than helping Americans affected by natural disasters. Under Secretary Noem's leadership, we are committed to ensuring that Americans in crisis can get the help and resources they need."
Approximately $882 million of funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will be returned to the U.S. Treasury or reapportioned by Congress in the next fiscal year. The 2021 law made $1 billion available for BRIC over five years, $133 million to date has been provided for about 450 applications. FEMA estimates more than $3.6 billion will remain in the Disaster Relief Fund to assist with disaster response and recovery for communities and survivors.
Ending this program will help ensure that grant funding aligns with the President's Executive Orders and Secretary Noem's direction and best support states and local communities in disaster planning, response and recovery.

And finally, the law of human decency: These funds go to support some of the neediest students in our country. If funding is withheld, states and districts may have to cut programs intended to help these students. Hurting kids like this is pure evil.

Administrative Procedure Act: Funds may not be unlawfully withheld or unreasonably delayed.

Appropriations law: Prohibits the withholding or delaying of funds appropriated by Congress.

The executive branch is refusing to distribute funding that was appropriated by Congress to be distributed in accordance with formulas laid out in statute. This violates, as they say in the legal world, a fuckton of laws.
