The Department of Education was created by Congress and can only be dismantled by Congress.
Exclusive: The Education Department plans to move multiple parts of the agency to other federal departments, an unprecedented effort to dismantle an agency created by Congress to ensure all Americans have equal access to educational opportunity.
Trump administration to announce dismantling of much of Education Dept.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March seeking to close the department, but only Congress has the power to do that.

Fun fact: The Phoenix Declaration was also the name of a statement issued by an LGBT-affirming clergy group in Arizona in 2003 that called on churches to fully welcome LGBTQ people and declared homosexuality neither a sin nor a choice and urged an end to discrimination. Probably different than this.
This should alarm everyone.

On Thursday, Florida, by unanimous vote, became the first state in the country to adopt “The Phoenix Declaration: An American Vision for Education.”
It was written by the Heritage Foundation, the same group behind Project 2025.

The U.S. Department of Education has found that students who take part in the College Access Migrant Program are far more likely to stay in school. But the Trump administration questions the effectiveness of such programs and calls them "extremely costly."

Don’t get it twisted: the people working *in* the department of education are suffering under the Trump administration’s leadership.

Those running the U.S. Department of Education right now are incompetent and do not care about our nation’s students AT ALL.

A new Trump admin rule could make employees of non-profits that work on immigration, DEI, or trans issues ineligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

Once again, Trump is specifically punishing employees at organizations that he ideologically opposes.

We’ve been hearing the rumors since the day the layoffs were announced, but ED has now confirmed. Still far from a done deal though.
Breaking news: The Education Department is looking to move a $15 billion program supporting students with disabilities out of the agency as it works to close the agency altogether, a department official said.

“There’s something opportunistic about what we’re watching right now,” says ED official from first Trump administration, astutely noting the obvious.
The prolonged government shutdown is helping the Trump administration advance its goal of closing the Department of Education — a longtime conservative aim that congressional Republicans have failed to act on.

We’ve now heard that most of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) at ED is being let go as well. The harm caused to students if these layoffs are allowed to proceed cannot be overstated. ED cannot carry out its statutorily required duties without these offices.

We are hearing that almost all of the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) has been let go. This is devastating news for both the employees, who are being treated as nothing more than political pawns, and for K–12 education in this country—both deserve better.
