Honestly a lot of the time I just don't think about the MSQ much, esp when talking about dynamics with other peoples XIV OCs. It's the elephant in the room I ignore so i can play dolls with my friends :D

The WoL canon is usually my main focus but I also keep in mind an alternate non WoL canon where he is just an adventurer, where the main story is just kinda hand waved as happening with the Scions and Altair is vaguely or not involved to justify keeping relationships similar across both canons

It's more accurate to describe it as him being more susceptible to the influences of aether around him, rather than taking in the aether around him to cast!

The effects of the aether can last longer based on his affinity to it

As even more added bits about that, during SHB the light sickness experienced was the metaphysical equivalent of over exerting yourself and accidentally causing stitches on an open wound to tear open.

His poor memory is also a byproduct of his "blank" aether, he keeps a journal to help with that :D

The same experience that caused his amnesia left a permanent mark on his soul, the blessing of light functioned as stitches for his metaphysical injuries and it's by Hydaelyn's blessing that he even survived his time (unwillingly) involved in the early phases of the Garlemald's Oversoul experiments.

Altair's aether lacks a lot of vibrancy one would expect from someone of his age, it's plentiful but sections of it are blank for lack of a better term.
The aether can recover to a more natural state, it always returns to that "blank" state, which is also why he is unable to manipulating aether
