Writing in the Scotsman this evening on why support for ID cards has plummeted since Keir Starmer announced his plan.

Last week I wrote that I would reject the government’s digital ID card. This week it has emerged that the general public feels the same way.

How support for digital ID cards has plummeted since Keir Starmer announced his plan
Keir Starmer needs to realise that leaders lead by following their principles, not by chasing opinion polls

Horrified and appalled by the attack outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

My thoughts are with the victims, our brave emergency services and the entire Jewish community.

Which is connected to the fact that Miliband is one of the few amongst the Labour leadership who is willing and able to articulate his policies from first principles. Not to say that I agree with all of what he does but you can at least see that he has some idea of why he is doing it.
stephenkb.bsky.social
I think we've seen this throughout the Starmer era, one reason why Miliband has been so influential is that he, along with Bridget Philipson, has been the frontbencher, and now minister, who has been most likely to respond to 'someone needs to provide direction' with 'and that someone is me'.

Neither I nor anyone else can say for certain what Nigel Farage's "true" motives are with his uneven treatment of different legal immigrants to the UK - we do not know the contents of his own mind - but we have the right to ask him for a proper explanation of his discriminatory policy.

Have Reform given a reason for this differential treatment - so they recognise it would be wrong to strip permanent status retrospectively for Europeans, but propose to do so for non-Europeans only?

Labour’s plans for mandatory Digital ID cards are nothing more than an expensive gimmick. They risk excluding older people, disabled people, and those without digital access - while costing taxpayers billions.

Opposing Labour’s Plans for Digital ID Cards

I am just disappointed that no political speechwriter seems to have noted the alliterative nature of Great Britain’s furthest separated substantive settlements:
‘From Hugh Town to Haroldswick, this government is investing in the widgets of the future!’

Naturally Lerwick had to be on the list, but top marks would have gone for a reference to Unst.

Enjoy putting together mad pairings of places for the imaginary but generic conference speech I’d write. From Falmouth to Falkirk, Aldeburgh to Aberystwyth, Weymouth to Wick, Plymouth to Peterhead, Lerwick to the Lizard, Brighton to Bo’ness, Mile End to Ealing, Brixton to Bounds Green, Reading to Le

No matter where you are in Scotland, you can elect a Liberal Democrat MSP on the peach-coloured regional ballot next year.

Every vote for the Scottish Liberal Democrats on that ballot will deliver change with fairness at its heart.
Liberal Democrats are winning again.

The Holyrood election in May is an opportunity for change with fairness at its heart.

Because Scotland deserves better - and with the Scottish Liberal Democrats, you can vote for it.

I'm glad Keir Starmer is finally stepping up the fight against Nigel Farage, and I hope this will mark the end of his government parroting Farage and copying his divisive politics.

Digital ID won’t stop small boats or illegal employment.
You already have to prove your right to work.
A national Digital ID is illiberal, unworkable and un-British.
I and the Liberal Democrats will do everything we can to stop this.

This is a sad day for our party, for liberals everywhere and for me personally. Ming was a guiding light and elder statesman for so many of us.

The Scottish Liberal Democrats are sad to announce the passing of Lord Menzies Campbell.

The thoughts of everyone in our party are with his family at this time.

Back in 2020, Ming Campbell was one of the 904 parliamentarians who stated that the imposing of National Security Law in HK by China is a 'fragrant breach of the Joint Declaration'

A champion of principles, he will be missed by all.

Ming Campbell was a dedicated public servant and a true Liberal giant.

His principled leadership opposing the Iraq War was a mark of his morality, courage and wisdom.

But more than that, he was an incredibly warm and caring friend and colleague.

We will miss him terribly.

Keir Starmer says everyone in the UK will be required to have mandatory digital ID. That’s not the kind of country we want to be.

Liberal Democrats have always stood up to defend civil liberties against government overreach.

We will fight tooth and nail to oppose these plans too.
amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social
I last spent time with Ming a few months ago in the House of Lords. Our conversation was everything I would want to remember of him - politically incisive, occasionally waspish about colleagues that met his disapproval, but always rooted in his commitment to liberalism. I shall miss him enormously.
amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social
Thinking about Ming today I realise that so many of my fondest memories include not just him but also Elspeth.  Their devotion to each other was deep and lasting and I know that her passing was a severe blow to him.
amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social
In parliament, Ming was one of those voices who was listened to when he spoke. He had a long track record in foreign affairs which was the perfect subject for his combination of political first principles and sharp analytical brain. He was also a highly effective advocate for North East Fife.
amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social
Over the years I have been fortunate to have access to his counsel as a mentor, a colleague, a leader and always as a friend.  When it really mattered in life Ming would be there to support his friends.
amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social
I am heartbroken to hear the news of Ming’s passing. I first met Ming Campbell as a Young Liberal student in 1983. I was immediately struck by his presence as a personality, an intellect and as a liberal. It was an impression that never left me.

There is a world of difference between us 1) *choosing* to make our lives simpler through digital technology and 2) the government, outside its manifesto, *compelling* us to have a digital ID, asking us to trust them with that single treaure trove of data, to tackle a problem it won't. #StillNo2ID

I spoke this week at an event held by @bigbrotherwatch.bsky.social on their latest report on digital ID. Keir Starmer's government is reportedly aiming to introduce such a system - Big Brother Watch's report sets out the serious problems with digital ID for the UK, something liberals must resist.

Nigel Farage, however, is already talking about revoking the rights of people who have lived here legally for years. Imagine a Farage-led government with the ability to control the movement, identities and rights of citizens and legal residents of our country. 11/
