Fun #StrangerThings theory: the warping of spacetime is leading to some REALLY SPECIFIC time-dilation effects, such as Holly Wheeler ageing 10 years in a 4-year timespan

Oh, hey, #StrangerThings5 actually pulled this thematic relevance out! Good for them
HENRY: You children are Special and Chosen, like Meg in A Wrinkle in Time!
ME: #WELLACTUALLY I think the point is the book was that Meg was NOT Special; her supercilious BROTHER was, and her quiet support and love rescued him in the end

I get tired of the complaints that Stranger Things is derivative. I have described it as watching the Darmok aliens trying to tell an original story, which probably isn't for everybody, but I think pastiche is a legit way to tell a story!
Okay, I still like Stranger Things a very lot

The show portrays that frustration WITHIN itself a few times, usually with Dustin losing Steve at some point and having to go back to basics, but it's also evident in the writing itself. You can feel the writers' frustration that they've lost their audience

Polaran for Day 31, WATER:

cho [t͡ʃə] - "water"

From PP tsúke. A surprisingly controversial origin word, all things considered

Polaran for Day 30, ICE & COOLTH:

tsóíkasító ['t͡sɔɪ.ka.si.to] - "refrigerator; icebox; freezer"

From Tsinesnassan tsi`oikasit`o, "oh thank goodness, it stays cold."

Polaran for Day 29, MINERAL DYES:

dzálkóí pkú ['d͡zæl.kɔɪ pku] - "Prussian blue; [Fe4[Fe(CN)6]"

Translates to "shocking blue" or "startling blue." The name actually comes from the accidental creation when a dyer was trying to create a red dye!

Overexplaining is a famous autistic trait, because we've run into a million scenarios where people DON'T pick up what we're putting down if we go at our normal pace. We have to slow down and back up, and we realize we've been assuming that everyone is with us when they might not know the BASICS

When you remove the shorthand and try to spell it it longhand for the uninitiated, you get clunky scenes struggling to articulate their point, like the Escape from Camazotz climax where Max tries SO HARD to convince Holly that she already IS Holly the Heroic #StrangerThings

It's not reference for reference's sake, though those are fun; it's a major theme of #StrangerThings. They have specifically written into the show that the kids use fictional analogies to interpret and relate to the stuff happening in their lives

I should update this thread! #MST3k
Unsolicited MST3k Recommendation of the day: the Aleksandr Ptushko films. Riffs aside, they're gorgeous--breathtaking, colorful, mythic, imaginative. All the heroes are big hairy meaty rectangles and invariably they're dumb as rocks. Fantastic

One of the best MST3K episodes and worst space operas ever is now free on YouTube. Glad to see it acquired from Netflix. It's like watching Galaxy Quest in reverse. Jonah kills it with the musical number.

It just feels like a whole heap of critics are complaining that #StrangerThings makes its point too well.

Polaran for Day 28, PLANT DYES

súnglé ['suŋ.gleɪ] - "greenthread dye; orange"

Abbreviation of Shubawothir 'súngléór súthen,' "greenthread dye." Popular as a dye and as a drink throughout Polara, though the drink is known as chúnro!

Polaran for Day 27, ANIMAL DYES

pórwósó ['poɹ.wo.so] - "carmine dye; carmine red"

Another borrowing from the textile-rich Shubawothir! This is an abbreviation of Shubawothir 'pórwósór súthen,' "cochineal dye"

Polaran for Day 26, EGGS:

wízhó ['wi.ʒo] - 'egg (fertilized)'

wogaú [wɔ.'gaʊ] - 'egg (food)'

Usually these refer to dragons' eggs; see Day 24, MEAT, for context. It also might refer to other animals' eggs

Polaran for Day 25, MILK & CHEESE:

dúbo ['du.bə] - "milk; specifically, cow's milk"

wúsrífa ['wus.ri.fə] - "cheese"

Mammals are plentiful enough to be domesticated in Polara, though wúsrífa's Tsisnaschan origin suggests it was invented further south.

OMG, OMG, OMG, please permit me to launch us into SPACE and go with Rredŕa for Day 20, GREENS!

drombash [drɔm.'baʃ] - "salad; leafy vegetables"

Colloquially, 'drombash' is used to mean something like "bullshit," as in an unhelpful nonsense offer

But I still don't get the aftershave-scream joke. I guess it stings when you put it on? But, like, on razor nicks, which he wouldn't have? What WAS that about. #HomeAlone

You know what? I have NEVER seen Home Alone. 40 years old and I haven't seen that one! This is a SHOCKING oversight that must be addressed TONIGHT!
I think those holiday specials I saw in early childhood fascinate me because they're a firsthand window into child cognitive development.

I see these specials and have very clear memories of being three years old and struggling to understand basic story beats

Polaran for Day 24, MEAT:

graúbl ['graʊb.(ə)l] - "dragon meat"

Birds don't exist in the world of Polara, so there is no such thing as poultry there; filling that biological niche is a clade of functionally similar animals we would recognize as dragons
