40 years ago, Philadelphia police & authorities waged war on a local community, including dropping a bomb that started a fire that destroyed an entire neighborhood. Remembering that tragedy reminds us of the eternal cost of "war from within."🗃️

Tana French was born in Vermont (a fact I only learned while researching her for the post below), but I'm not gonna pretend that her phenomenal series of mysteries about the Dublin Murder Squad aren't deeply Irish. Yet like all great literature, they still have a ton of echoes with our stories.

I wrote this column to memorialize the MOVE bombing, which remains frustratingly under-remembered in collective narratives, but also to remind us that our current fascist "war from within"--the one proposed in Trump's Quantico speech, & the one happening already--amplifies the worst of our history.

It's impossible to count how many things are shitty right now. Which makes it more important than ever to lean into the joys, for their own sake, & also to give us strength to keep fighting the good fights.

I haven't had the chance to blog about too many 21st century crime/mystery writers, but one to whom I've returned multiple times--just as, not coincidentally, I've done as a delighted reader--is the phenomenal @atticalocke.bsky.social. She's a worthy heir to Walter Mosley, & much more as well.
