You are correct. Take the iconic cowboy, for example. Real, range-riding, cattle-herding cowboys existed for about 30 years. A lot of them were Black or indigenous. But they (white cowboys at least) have become an indelible symbol, worldwide, of rugged American independence. It's a bit skewed.

I’ve always said that one of the things Americans do best is make up myths about themselves and then believe them. The ideal of America is wonderful. Freedom for all, opportunity, endless possibilities if you go out there and make things happen.

The reality has *never* been like that.

Oh, no, the harm is real, and so is the self-harming stupidity. It just seems that the ideology favours "whatever will harm the people we hate" (cruelty, you're right) over "whatever will make everyone's lives better". I honestly have no idea what they hope to accomplish by all of this.
