Texas continued a long-term downward trend in capital punishment in 2025, coming in a distant second-place tie behind Florida in the number of executions carried out by state. Harris County saw a spike in the number of new death sentences issued.

President Trump has frozen the processing of immigration requests for all Afghans. Many Afghan immigrants who came to the U.S. through the appropriate legal channels, including those in Houston, are growing increasingly worried.
