As far as I can remember he told us that some them were treated well. They had to be sent to school to get the BO allowance - many were happy to have a break from the daily drudgery and the school Domestic Science teacher often gave them food - so not all bad
Some of these are interesting
In the late 50s I remember my father, an Ag teacher in a Vocational School, visiting small farms and inspecting potato drills as part of exam practicals. Most of the boys slept in hay barns and were badly treated - they came mainly from so called Mother & Baby homes
