Sea otter pups require round the clock care from their moms for the first six months. Otter mothers will teach their young to eat, hunt, groom, and generally otter! This is a full time job and requires a lot of energy so if you see an otter with its baby, give them space! #seaotterawarenessweek

Sea otters play a crucial role in regulating coastal ecosystems! By preying on sea urchin, otters allow kelp forests to flourish, providing habitat for a diverse community. In the absence of sea otters, urchins can overrun kelp, creating what is known as “urchin barrens.” #seaotterawarenessweek

Sea otters burn calories faster than you or me to keep warm in cold waters! Because of this, energy management is especially important and otters will much of their free time napping to save energy! To stop from floating far while they snooze, otters wrap up in kelp to stay anchored #respectthenap

Happy Ottumn! While Joey and Kunik might be looking fashionable for their ott couture shoot, sea otters don’t need extra layers! They have the densest fur of all mammals! Add to that their incredibly fast metabolism and these fluffy ovens are perfectly adapted to cold waters! #seaotterawarenessweek
