An updated and extended version of my "Should the UK rejoin PEM?" paper has been published by @uktpo.org.

It addresses one of the main concerns on the UK side (spoiler, it's not what you think).

With the EU-UK Summit coming up - should the UK consider rejoining?

An occasional reminder to all the companies out there thinking that just cause their goods successfully passed CBP border screening, they're off the hook.

Customs compliance is monitored AFTER the border. CBP has a good few years to come knocking and ask you for evidence.

Krugman makes a great point that Trump’s tariffs encourage importers to avoid or evade them. All his exceptions and special favors make that easier. And pulling CBP off for immigration raids means there are fewer experienced agents who know what they are seeing when they check customs invoices.

Yes, tariffs are hurting us. No, Trump wasn’t right.

Indeed, the risk and incentives are there. Especially given the low volume of goods actually checked and controlled at the border. The risk of getting caught is very low. But the consequences if you do are much higher than normal.

Great, now if they could also maybe confirm whether or not we're going ahead with deforestation in less than 100 days and whether or not companies need to spend time and money on getting ready, that would be super helfpul.

It was good to contribute to FT's story on e-commerce and the proposed national handling fees.

The handling fee for all e-commerce parcels is likely to be introduced on the EU level next year. For some EU member states, it may come sooner.

Indeed, it's just outside Olhao. Not as nice as Castro Marim.

I can try but you'd need to be very specific as to what you mean by export compliance, as that can mean so many things. Also would depend on the industry

Here you go. Took me a while to find a website link. So this is the final version that came out of the Council. This includes the Council's corrections and amendments and corrections.

Politico on Deforestation. You could not make these things up.

As a reminder, last year's delay of EUDR was officially finally confirmed on 18 Dec, giving businesses 13 whole days of legal certainty before the day the regulation was set to go live.

Heard it in a meeting last week and have to say had the same reaction. But then again... following the EU's contract earlier this year... makes just as much sense as any other trade deal

UK-Greenland deal set to be unveiled... what was fun yesterday was how with ministers and media on the same site we went from rumour to laughter to near confirmation within a few hours... www.politico.eu/article/uk-g...

This is also not that many pacels. It's less than what we would have per day in the EU.
Still I wonder what the costs are.
annajerzewska.bsky.social
When we calculated the cost of implementing controls on low value shipments in the EU it was barely worth it. In the US the threshold was higher but average value still way belofw 150.
annajerzewska.bsky.social
Shh he hasn't figured that part out yet
annajerzewska.bsky.social
You can't tariff everything. But you sure can try.

And while it's very entertaining for us trade wonks, it leads to anxiety and uncertainty for the industry. As in even more anxiety and uncertainty.
annajerzewska.bsky.social
I don't think we thought this through properly.

I literally can't wait to see what they come up with.
annajerzewska.bsky.social
Maybe you can tell me what this is then? It was outside the little bird cage area

And now we wait for EOs.
As a lot of people pointed out, this is not going to stop and it will be interesting to see how all the deals hold up, whether or not there will be any exemptions and how these tariffs are applied.

Never a dull moment.
annajerzewska.bsky.social
We all know that's the case. Not only deals, the entire Trump tariff policy. But there was also a possibility of the EU trying to square the circle here and pretend everything is fine and I think this is a better option
