Let's not be so obsessed with continuous street walls in this city. Street-level retail isn't the only way to animate the street. Tucking in the occasional front courtyard / parkette or side walkway/lane enriches the pedestrian experience with the street and its landscaping.

On a trip to Paris I noticed so many pockets of modest green space on the Left Bank that are tucked in next to, or in-between buildings, & none of them took away from the pedestrian's street level experience. On the contrary, these little surprises off the beaten path / sidewalk enhance it! (2/2)

Does the City have a design bias for continuous built form to define streets, etc.? If so, then this necessarily limits landscaping to narrow ribbons of space that end up conflicting with the realities of city life. (1/2)
