mugwortmag.wordpress.com/2025/07/19/s...

You’ll find plants, birds, the sea, holidays... & of course, the edges: the shifting borders between the human & non-human, the urban & the wild, this world & others.

We hope you have a beautiful journey through each one. 🌿

“Visiting my father, I bring peaches / from his local supermarket. / They’re reduced in price, spotted with bruises, /
but rich and sweet as those we ate / in the steep meadow of an Italian summer / almost forty years ago.”

An Easter poem I wrote a few years ago, which was published in New Writing Scotland 39 (2021) - and I've just realised it was shared by ASL this Easter. I'm touched, honoured and delighted all at once. I hope my grandmother would be pleased...

A Benediction

There’s a boulder by the forest path,
left by the ice ten thousand years ago,
it waits, patterned with lichen

the quietest blue, yellow soft as cream,
knee-high, flat-topped, so wide
I cannot wrap my arms around it –

small hands of moss patter up its side.
It’s nothing like my grandmother’s table
at Easter, but that’s what comes to mind,

dark brown and shining under the white cloth,
bearing the feast, eggs dyed with onion skins
and at the centre, sweet pashka

a resurrection of butter, eggs, and cream,
radiant with bright sugared fruits –
moss green, rowan red, the sun’s strong yellow.

Just realised, I meant to write "...with such compassion and grace..." - not "some"!

Oh your poem is wonderful. It embraces so many really existential aspects of human life with some compassion and grace - it feels to me like there's such genuine emotion and philosophical enquiry perfectly and compassionately combined.

Thank you for reading it, and I'm glad it resonated with you!

that's beautiful. And a shiver down my spine.

I enjoy these podcasts. I seldom have the time for lengthy podcasts - these are c.15 minutes and I emerge from them feeling I've really spent time with the poems discussed in each.
