Very sharp analysis, as ever. Growing up in the Venetian region, this article resonates (and one more lesson: the need to secure raw material: Venetian naval industry - and the construction of Venice - relied on an abundant supply of high-quality wood from forests in nearby Veneto/Friuli/Istria).
