i know they've done this enough times now to warrant it but i still think it's funny how we have live concert/show recordings of goddamn SiIvaGunner

chromium just reintroduced - and then removed yet again - jpeg xl support lmao

(the revert is seemingly temporary, it was done because of a potential memory issue detected by ASAN)

the intel atom n270 - which was used in the eee pc 900a/901 - also looks to be a good contender

so i guess i just need to get ahold of an eee pc somehow?

cpubenchmark.net seems to indicate that the intel celeron b710 is the lowest on the list

i'm unsure what it could have been used in

@sterophonick at the very least i'd like something _usable_ first

we don't have that at the moment because we seemingly haven't even figured out how to extract and load the needed firmware with nouveau
January 1, 2026 at 4:21 AM
@luana starting with maxwell, the PMU will only accept firmware signed by nvidia themselves

for turing gpus and later, that functionality is handled with the GSP instead (and those gpus have the benefit of having open components released by nvidia themselves)
January 1, 2026 at 4:18 AM
i definitely feel like convincing them to release what's needed for them now would go nowhere since they'd rather partner with palantir than give a single damn about the desktop

there's a pretty big question for linux distro maintainers/developers now: how can these widely available, still-in-use cards be actively supported into the future with as little maintenance/patching as possible from their end?
January 1, 2026 at 4:03 AM
it almost feels calculated in a way

maxwell and pascal were both very popular generations of their gpus, opening the ability for unofficial driver implementations to legally happen on both their earlier and later cards but not those two generations specifically feels intentional
January 1, 2026 at 3:58 AM
the more i think about nvidia dropping maxwell/pascal support from their drivers the more i feel like this could've been the worst possible time/way to do it

@sterophonick i really want to see that haiku nvk port be published, supposedly they ported it to run on top of nvidia's open kernel modules and i think it would be interesting to compare how it runs versus nvidia-utils and nouveau/nova

@fish someone should make one i think

@j part of why i made the above post was because i saw this one

this could also potentially be a useful query

i am close to just starting my own list of specifically llm content farm blog domains because they're so goddamn annoying and prevalent and the existing lists are either much broader in scope or focused on specific communities

i need to figure out what i can at least work on to try and draw something that looks even slightly better than a sketch i would've made in 3rd grade

oscillating constantly between "i need to draw so bad" and "i can't possibly draw what i see through my mind's eye"
