I’m a freelance writer and editor currently living in Pittsburgh with my partner (he’s the tall one in the photo of our two shadows) and our two cats.

If I’ve never met you IRL, please don’t DM me. I won’t respond.
Am I the only one who wondered whether or not there's a way to recall a US Senator or Representative? Context: I live in PA, and John Fetterman is our nominally-dem Senator. Well, I looked it up and the answer is no. The constitution does not allow voters to recall Senators or Representatives.

Here I am after finishing my 20 km run this morning. 😊 Yes, my hair is dripping sweat and my hat (which I knit - pattern is Shedir - like…god, almost 20 years ago now. 😬😂) Philly half-marathon, here I come!

Great, our “fall back into standard time” happened last night. Who among us can explain the maneuver to our cats?

In case anyone needs one more reason to ditch their Amazon membership - and to stop buying from them altogether. (I get that the latter is difficult because it’s not always easy to tell whether or not a company uses them to fulfill online orders.) www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Thunderstorm rolling into Pittsburgh. Rain tapping on the windowpanes. Flashes of cold white light. Long, low rumbles. Lovely. Goodnight.

Here’s an #ecology question for the #ecologists - specifically #populationdynamics. I live in Pittsburgh. PA has a spotted lantern fly problem. On the local news and in local popular culture, the advice is to kill as many as you possibly can. 1/

Well, I have returned after about a month off social media. The algorithm here was creating a lefty vitriol vortex. We have a lot to be angry about, but online vitriol is like revving the engine when you’re stuck in the mud. If you want to get anywhere, the rubber has to meet the road.

I have a ritual for the solstices and equinoxes. They happen 4 times per year, or every 3 months. On that same frequency, dentists recommend changing out your toothbrush every 3 months. QED. I always notice the former, and that helps me remember to do the latter. 🪥😄

I ordered a used copy of Darwin’s Origin of Species from ThriftBooks. It arrived today. I found this photo in it. I’m intrigued…

I keep feeling little moments of fear, like…am I safe on this platform? No. Of course I’m not. My posts are not private. But fuck it, I’m not going to pull my punches. Fuck all of this shit. Shall we dance?

Alt: Let Go Bro GIF. Black and white “cow cat” moving in a way that’s highly unnatural and unexpected for a cat.

I know we all hard core want Hamilton to be the defining musical theater production of our era. But I think it’s actually Cabaret.

For those going on about Wyatt Russell being the "son of Kurt Russell," you know he's also Goldie Hawn's son, right?

Right?

As an undergrad I learned this as Hieracium aurantiacum, but it has a different genus now: Pilosella aurantiaca, or orange hawkweed / fireweed. I love it.

Two days in a row! They used to curl up together like this all the time, until Echo (at right in both photos) developed hyperthyroidism. After about 6 months of finding an effective dose of methimazole, her aggression and irritability are better, and she’s back up to 10 lbs (from 7.5 lbs).

Went for a walk with my partner, just got back. While walking we heard a nighthawk’s calls. The air smelled like honeysuckle, and the eastern sky was a lovely shade of indigo.

Calling Native crops “sleeping” reinforces settler colonial erasure. These plants endure through #Indigenous care and ecological knowledge. This is not dormancy—it’s survivance: living, adapting, and resisting in ongoing relationship with land.
