💡 This study highlights music's ability to convey meaning both independently and in conjunction with emotions. Understanding how soundtrack music conveys meaning can enhance media #accessibility, support auditory-based #learning, and create more immersive experiences in #film, #art, and #gaming

Key findings:
🎵 musical features can trigger several aspects of imagined movie scenes and evoke distinct scene elements, functioning either independently or by forming specific groupings
🎵 negatively valenced emotions play a key role in shaping the scenes that listeners imagined

We asked study participants to listen to short instrumental soundtrack clips and:
🎭 Indicate the emotions the music evoked
🎬 Describe the movie scene they imagined, in their own words
🖼️ Identify specific elements of the imagined movie scene

In our study, now out in Scientific Reports, @karleighgroves.bsky.social, Morwaread Mary Farbood, Brandon Carone, @pripolles.bsky.social, and I explored how instrumental soundtrack music can trigger movie-like scenes in the listener's imagination, and the role that emotions play in this process.
