in case you missed the announcement...

I'm editing this very cool anthology, which will open to submissions in January 🖤

I plan to write a wee bit of inspiration posts in case anyone is struggling with the brief 💛

Received a potential client query this week that was entirely AI written. they didn't say it was but it was entirely obvious.

I'm really pleased to announce that I'm editing the forthcoming anthology, Modern Decadent, for Wild Hunt Books. It has only been announced today, but I'm already feeling that 2027 can't come soon enough! The anthology will comprise ca. 10 stories that embrace the spirit of the art and literature of the Decadent movement. I'll be open to short stories submissions in late January 2026.

I have a very cool (and secret) publishing project on the horizon 🖤

Can't wait to share a few scant details next week
* COMING SOON *

Interrupting our normal weird chatter:

New opportunity coming in the new year. Announcement coming next week. Sign up for our newsletter (link in bio) to hear about it first. We're gonna be cryptic till then.

How to format your novel manuscript so an editor actually reads it!
This post originally appeared on the Wild Hunt Books blog. You wouldn’t expect it, but more often than not, I receive manuscripts that are so strangely formatted that they are just about unreadable. And if that’s the case with yours, it’s a disservice to all the hard work and passion you’ve put into your book. It’s easy to format your manuscript to industry-standard (and don’t think that being kooky with your font choices or adding pictures will grab the attention of an editor; it won’t or it will for the wrong reasons).

I've noticed a lot of manuscripts being sent my way are struggling with lack of interiority and stakes/tension. so much feels surface level.

shall write an editor-y blog post about this, me thinks

hello fellow freelance editors,

have you added generative AI policies into your freelance contracts, i.e., cancelling client's that use gen AI to 'write' their manuscript and & subsequent kill fees and procedures

i have language in publishing contracts but not in my own for clients

Reading the Weird celebrates spooky season all year long, but now an Edgar Allen Poe deep dive feels...thematically appropriate. This week let's discuss "Metzengerstein," Poe's first published story 📖

teeny reminder that i re-opened recently to agent subs
A reminder to agents that I've reopened to subs. Very interested in literary fiction with darkness; unusual mysteries; unreliable narrators; modern-set gothic; folk horror; horror that leans literary; weird fiction; dark vibes & remote locations

a bit disheartening to always hear that readers should support indie bookshops but many bookshops don't pay their invoices to small publishers leaving us in the hole for hundreds of £££

bless those bookshops who pay on time without a temper tantrum

the grim satisfaction when your accounts are up to date but that *another* UK bookseller still owes you £££ from a late unpaid invoice

Really happy to say that I've had a good run of clients this year (not always the case!). A bit booked for the next several weeks but opening up starting in October (could squeeze in a shorter manuscript in September if in a rush).

Let me know how I can help
