if anyone was interested in the solution: paint your focal point first to anchor the painting (it's usually the figure). Then make a rule that nothing else in the painting will be more saturated than that anchor, and voila

i feel like painting for me is struggling through different processes until you land on one specific method that you can never replicate across other paintings again

it keeps things fresh, but very frustrating at the same time

today's art problem: olive skin in cool light

olive skin is already cool toned where it's more green than red, so cool light just makes them look gray, and saturated makeup makes the contrast worse
