I can tell Abigail Spanberger is a great mom because she didn’t let Winsome Earle-Sears’ rude and erratic behavior get to her. I was ready for her to start gentle parenting her. “You’re having some really big feelings, Winsome. It’s okay to have big feelings but we can’t interrupt. Catch a bubble!”

If Winsome Earle-Sears doesn’t think being fired for being gay is discrimination, what she’s really saying is that LGBTQ+ people don’t deserve the same rights as she does. She is so full of hatred that she just couldn’t help herself but to interrupt with her bigotry.

With that, meeting adjourned.

Mr. Key has nothing to add, but says he has witnessed Dr. Kelley with the marching band and enjoyed it.

Mrs. Sheridan gives a shoutout to the marching band. She reminds everyone that Friday is an early dismissal day and Monday is a no school day. Thanks all the staff, especially Wanda Morris, for putting on the Fall Festival at Central. She will continue to monitor the SRO situation.

Dr. Kelley thinks it is important to allow sitting board members to participate remotely and wants that to continue be the norm. He is excited for the musical stipend.

School board member comments up first. Rittenhouse up first. He thanks everyone for the information and for being able to participate remotely.

She also brings up the school nutrition program. She says she hears from that breakfast options are very sugary like donuts and sugary cereal. She's very grateful for the CEP that allows students to eat. She doesn't disparage the program at all and want to provide meals to kids who needs them.

She is also thrilled that there is some support for increased SAT funding. Sarah was part of the group who raised money to get it paid for by the community. She says it was a small amount of the budget that was removed, and she hopes it gets put back.

Sarah Johnson, candidate for Cunningham School Board is up next week. She thanks three out of four of them for approving the musical stipend. She was in the pit orchestra in high school and has never forgotten those memories.

He plugs the Fluvanna Fall Festival happening next week and thanks the school board for their work.

Sean Brennan, candidate for Columbia School Board is up next. He is glad that we discussed attendance aides and he hopes that they are funded. He sees the detriment to students, families, and community if absenteeism is not addressed.

As a side note, this man went well over his time, which is usually never allowed, and certainly not allowed for me. Wonder what the difference is.....? 🤔

Because of this, Fluvanna ends up training officers for other jurisdictions. He feels like his children are vulnerable. We spend money each year on safety and keeping things up to code for fire, but children do not die in school fires. They do die from school shootings.

He says there should be armed police officers or retired police officers should be there. It would behoove the board to back the Sheriff's office and make it more competitive to law enforcement professionals. Fluvanna has decent starting pay, but does not keep up with years of service increases

Mike Wells from Fork Union is up for the public comment period. He has been a law enforcement officer since 1994 and has two kids. He understands that the Sheriff has competing priorities, but he is confused about what could be more important than safety at our schools.

12B was added to the agenda at the last minute. This is to fix a clerical error in the budget from last year where a stipend for a spring musical stipend was left off. It passes 3-1. Rittenhouse is against it. Apparently he hates musicals.

The VSBA policy updates for September are approved 4-0.

Mr. Key asks if our drop out rate compares to the state. She doesn't know but will bring it back.

Kelley says the October meeting when all of this data is shared annually is one of the best meetings of the year. He doesn't know how the board can do its job without knowing this information. He thanks Soares for all of her hard work on this.
ashleighcrocker.bsky.social
Kelley says he wants to see SAT funding back in the budget for next year. Yes please! It never should have been taken out of the budget in the first place!
ashleighcrocker.bsky.social
Soares says that they should add SAT testing to the budget for next year. The number of students who are taking the test is down significantly since the school board stopped paying for it. A group of community members inlcuding myself raised $8k+ to pay for it, but that didn't cover it all.

Kelley asks if there is a shared definition of gifted. He'd like to learn more about how it is defined, what the signals are, and how they transcend standardized and project based learning. He thinks we should provide more enrichment for all students regardless of designation.
ashleighcrocker.bsky.social
Kelley notes that there's no reason that the pie chart for the demographics of the division and those enrolled in the gifted program should be different. There are significantly more white students in the gifted program than those in the Hispanic, Black, or "Other" category.

They are trying to leverage existing staff to support this need a little bit better by adding more science and history content into the literacy curriculum.
