When the fugitive Lincoln assassination conspirator John Surratt was returned to the U.S. to face trial in 1867, he came face-to-face with members of the Kanza/Kaw tribe. For Native American Heritage Month, we share the story of The Kaw and the Last Lincoln Conspirator:

Happy Birthday to Edwin Booth! Despite his success as the greatest Hamlet of all time and one of the best actors of his generation, Edwin forever lived in the private melancholy and shame of his brother’s crime at Ford’s Theatre.

Lt. John Toffey was in the audience of Ford’s Theatre & then rushed to tell the news of the crime to his superiors. While reporting, a riderless horse galloped by, which Toffey overtook. It was later discovered that the horse had been ridden by Lewis Powell after his attack on Seward. #VeteransDay

Happy Halloween! This is a rare carte de visite produced while John Wilkes Booth was on the run. It shows the outline of the assassin on horseback made from beasts and a devilish hand. The visage of Abraham Lincoln looks on from the clouds. This comes from the collection of the ALPLM. #skystorians 🗃️

In 1901, writer & Lincoln collector Osborn Oldroyd walked the escape route of John Wilkes Booth. During his visit behind Ford’s Theatre, he was greeted by some alley cats. Don’t wear down your paws like Oldroyd did. Consider taking a guided Lincoln Assassination Tour by bus instead. #NationalCatDay
