I'm absolutely convinced what makes Shakespeare inaccessible to a lot of audiences isn't the iambic pentameter old english it's the fact most plays are rehearsed as spoken verses and not acted with meaning

because when actors actually act out what they're saying it is So Clear

One curious thing on this site about speaking out against the encroachment of LLMs is that inevitably you get accused of being anti-tech. I don’t hate technology. I’ve used machine learning in my own code before. But I also recognize that oligarchs are so hellbent on pushing this tech for a reason.

what a wild way to say "we have stolen and will continue to steal everything you ever put on the internet"
Large language models like Claude are pretrained on enormous amounts of public text from across the internet, including personal websites and blog posts. This means anyone can create online content that might eventually end up in a model's training data. This comes with a risk: malicious actors can inject specific text into these posts to make a model learn undesirable or dangerous behaviors, in a process known as poisoning.

It doesn’t matter where you stand on inclusionary zoning; all Pittsburgh residents deserve an honest and transparent process and we should rightfully expect our councilmembers to act in good faith.

just watched a dozen people ask microsoft copilot experts their most pressing questions and those questions were 90% “how do i turn it off?” and “when i turn it off, is it really off or is it spying on me?”

yeah the whiplash i get when i see like "this tech is a net negative" and "so we should teach people how to use it better" one after the other is wild like just stop using it?

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

run 21 yesterday

a) first cold night of running was glorious

b) was very intimidated by two rounds of 8 min of jogging but we did it!

c) first 8 min covered a km! i know that sounds pretty slow but its a huge accomplishment for me haha (in the second round i think we got to maybe 0.7 or 0.8km?)

idk if i have any dramatic essay writing stories or if i just blocked out a lot of my procrastinated writing assignments LOL but i did spend a summer writing 1.5 hr long lectures for the day from scratch right up until class time (summer classes are every day)

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.
wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

Ohio State astronomy is still waiting to see what happens with the federal funding landscape before deciding whether to proceed. With programs that are still TBD, I recommend waiting right now because *application fees do not get refunded if they decide to cancel after you have already paid*!!

So far the astronomy PhD programs that have cancelled admissions are Washington, Michigan State, and Case Western.
