I write free verse poetry. Our world needs more beauty and kindness.

All words and photos are mine, unless otherwise stated. No AI used. 🇦🇺🌷

How does one introduce oneself in a forum such as this #bluesky with only 300 characters, which includes the spaces? Perhaps it's in the spaces where one's true identity lies. The untold stories. The unheard sighs.

I like to write and ponder upon things. The rest is in all those spaces. 🌷
Do you also hear your name sung gently when immersed in nature? I hope so.

I ponder on many things, much hurts my heart. A hurt that weighs heavy is injustice, which is so blatant throughout our world. In particular how women are being treated in Afghanistan. My view is that religion/faith is not truly the cause, it's the excuse/screen ... love of power is the real evil.

The day wanted to remind me it was almost done & that I should aways pay attention to unexpected beauty before the night disappeared it.

This just happened, and it was gone in a matter of moments. You & me, in the infinite spiral of time, will also be gone in a matter of moments ... shine bright.

Does grief haunt me? No. Rather grief accompanies me, together we weave a new way of being.

Grief is not to be shunned, for once you learn its intent you realise it comes not to burden you, instead it desires to free you. Yet this path awaits to be learnt.

You arrive without bidding
cast your light to disperse
the clinging darkness
You answer to no force
alone your own
You care little for the
machinations of humankind
Yet, we depend on you
Would we but consider more
our stewardship of all living things,
perhaps we could prevent our
slide into oblivion

I have plans for one day putting together a book of my poems and photos on the theme of grief and grieving ... I've composed quite a few now, and I don't seem to be stopping any time soon.

One important thing I've learnt about grief, is we can't compare our grieving to others.

This one's for Tara @tarasmithson.bsky.social She light heartedly suggested I could write a poem about flying like a Peregrine. I put that aside. Suddenly words started forming last night. So here it is. Perhaps all bird lovers might like it. See ALT @alan678.bsky.social @robcrank68.bsky.social

My window is crying
droplets of water
released by grey
low hanging clouds
slowly slither
down the glass
blur the outside,
cause me to ponder
How does one hold
the sadness, sorrow
that builds within,
should they remain hidden
or, set free?

Sadness, sorrow do better
when released
Tears need to fall

Supermarket flowers
cut from their birthing place
await patiently to be
admire anew,
colours bright, subdued
just seeking love
one last time

In your haste,
your desire to get ‘it’ done
don’t forget to peer
at your feet and
notice the wonder
which humankind
did not create

Smoke from distance fires
cloak the morning hour,
turns the water red,
attempts to smother
the rising sun
Earthy sweet scent
invades the air,
impedes deep breaths
Forgive us, ancient trees, bushland
once more you are sacrificed
upon the alter of human greed

This is the first poem in my first ever printed book. 😮 I've created 12 poems all focusing on the word 'Quiet'. The other poems are entitled: Calm; Whisper; Lull; Placid; Soundless; Stillness; Unvoiced; Silence; Tranquillity; Hushed; & Quiescent. Each accompanied by a photo. A meditation of sorts. ♥️

Well, I did a thing. I'm at the beginning of an experiment. I wrote 12 poems focusing on the word 'quiet', I matched them with 12 of my photos. I used an online site to create a book, then found a boutique printer in Sydney, who printed them. They have just arrived. What now?

Whence comes the joy
the simple effervescence of living
the sheer pleasure of …
drawing breath
splashing in puddles
dancing with a tree
inhaling a flower’s fragrance
holding the hand of another
a feathered kiss on a cheek

Appreciate the simplicity of joy
and she will turn your
world upside down

There are reasons that I don't describe myself as a 'poet', but rather a 'wordsmith'. This piece is one reason why. I don't follow 'normal' poetic conventions. I asked a poet friend, who recently died, what is poetry? He replied, 'whatever you want it to be'. Mmmmm ... okay. Hasn't convinced me. 😊

Peering into the heart of a flower
the noise, the haste
of the world disappeared
the longer my gaze was transfixed
the more I realised that
life is not about power
attaining more material wealth
rather real living is about
being held by wonder
living in awe
reaching out in love

The creating process can have its surprises. I'd been sitting with these words for a few days, suddenly this morning it kind of finished itself. When I then thought of a photo to complete it, this one came to me. I'd been sitting with this photo for a month or so. The ALT text will tell more.

To some, it appears I am lost …
I move not in the direction
the majority move,
I view my surroundings
through different lenses,
I listen for that which is
often overlooked, disregarded

I am not lost …
I’m just not where you are,
or, think I should be

Okay here goes for #BirdOfTheDay. These fellas got tired of #paddling and decided to hijack a boat to get things going a little faster. Okay, okay ... I accept disqualification ... but this is one of my favourite photos. Don't normally photograph birds. Still giggle at this one.

O Spring, my Spring
your fickle nature
has become all
too known

Winter struggles
to let go, plunging
days back into his
cool embrace, while
Summer is too
eager to impose
her heat

O Spring, caught
in a tug-o-war
between Winter
and Summer

The clouds, they seek
to please none,
they merely delight in
the freedom of being
their created purpose,
they measure not their worth
against expectations,
they dance in wonder
and creativity,
in doing so
astound and delight us

You, who have stood
year on year,
recording within your rings
the history of changing times
You who take in our toxins,
return life-giving oxygen
Consigned to a museum,
your reign is ending,
earth’s balance tilts a little
more toward destruction.

Oh, my fellow beings,
do you not yet understand?
November 9, 2025 at 12:38 AM
The story of us ended …
One tear at a time
One exhausted body
One anguished scream
One silent cry
One last regret
One extinguished heart beat
…and a million,
million memories entwined
so that pieces of you
inhabit every breath
yet to be breathed.
Our story ended
yet it can never be erased.

Upon a fence, unnoticed by most
you climb, entwine, shine
in your fine spring greenery
Your edges so exquisitely sculpted
lines designed … just so
Your delicate pattern … divine
replicated over and again
What wonder is this
so simple, defined,
yet so extra-ordinary?

I see you - you are sublime
November 7, 2025 at 1:32 AM
Ah my feathered friend
do you feel it too
as together we witness
the genesis of a new day
.. time as yet, unwritten
… vacant moments to be filled
…. memories awaiting their stories
….. love yet not conceived
…… grief soon to be gifted?

But not just yet … let us simply ‘be’ a while longer
