Bunting doesn't work. Hitting doesn't work. Might be time for these guys to start trying some tomfoolery.

I think the real brilliance of Taylor on this one was that she successfully framed LOAS much more as a follow-up to the Eras Tour — and spiritually, as a follow-up to '1989' — than as a follow-up to TTPD.

This game already might have set a new standard for juiced-up pitchers yelling insane shit to nobody as they head to the dugout
augetoffmygold.bsky.social
Oh absolutely. I just think that says more about Taylor and what she's done over her career to this point — developing a fanbase truly without equal in my lifetime and making nearly every right step in the past 18 years (particularly in the last five) — than it does about this album specifically.
augetoffmygold.bsky.social
I don't think I understand the distinction you're making at the end here.
augetoffmygold.bsky.social
Now the streaming totals are also absurdly big, so it's def not like no one's listening to this album. We'll see how those sustain; for TTPD the dropoff was much quicker than I (or likely she) anticipated. But I just don't think the sales say that much about if people are digging the record or not.

In truth, album sales have never had less to do with how much fans want to listen to an album. Most younger fans aren't even buying albums to play them, but as art objects, as collectibles, as shows of support for their favs. I know someone who bought 7 copies and prob won't actually listen to any.
augetoffmygold.bsky.social
I don't doubt there's a good # of general-interest purchases in that total. But there's also a very big number of Swifties buying up to double-digits of the literally dozens of variants available. We'll never have exact totals but it's not actually 3.5 million people buying this album.

Bottom line: I think "mixed" is actually the perfect word to describe the reaction to this album. As far as I can tell, just about every perspective on it is ably represented by some not-inconsiderable percentage of listeners.
augetoffmygold.bsky.social
That said, I think Taylor is so popular and appeals to so many different demos/ages — and for so many different reasons — that no one person is going to get a sampling of opinions in their circles that is totally representative. Everyone's seeing a pretty small part of the elephant, so to speak.
augetoffmygold.bsky.social
Well commercially, it's a win and a massive one. But I don't think the sales number means much about the album's overall reception. 2.7 mil of that came on the first day, and in reality a very large % of that was pre-ordered even earlier. The # is indicative of Taylor's popularity, not this album's.

as in what you've heard from people is uniformly positive?

mostly where I'm at (also what even is "full power" for this team and for how much of the season do we actually expect to be at it)

I am not really even standing on home plate currently, that's how much throw to first

Listening to PinkPantheress' 'Fancy Some More?' a really fun remix album that nonetheless once again demonstrates why comparing other remix albums to 'Brat and it's completely different' is like comparing other blockbuster sequels to 'The Godfather Part II'

Not a lot of times in life I can feel myself explicitly Practicing Self-Care but this morning after one of the more brutal Philly sports nights of my life I did interrupt my usual run through New Music Friday to listen to the full 'Brat' remix album

and ftr I don't really know why he would? He's not a known personality, not all his movies are Cool Guy Movies, and though there's obv some overlapping themes/actors/devices across his filmography I would say there is not a Thing to his movies like there is with those others (or even w/ Brother Wes)

I agree! We talk some about this on the pod, how ahead of her time she was as an underground/not-quite-pop star

This Vintage Almost-Pop Stardom episode of the Greatest Pop Stars podcast looks at the Björk of 30 years ago — too enigmatic to fit in anywhere, but too spectacular to ignore.

Yesterday, one of the finest albums of the 21st century turned 10. Natural Born Losers thrives on taboos how contemporaneous alt-pop stars could only dream of approaching. The doors it opened are numerous, substantial, and growing. www.pastemagazine.com/music/nicole...
