💬 What does it mean to take a category of pornographic content, refuse to define it, and then apply incredibly hard rules over its regulation? That’s the question I tackle in my 🔥latest🔥 article on animated porn representing children and produced with digital tech www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
The limits of ‘zero tolerance’ policies for animated pornographic media
This article examines how policies over animation on pornographic platforms fail to take into consideration its nature as manufactured media, a genre category that now encompasses cartoons and arti...

Let me know when we can have a conversation about the people in Naruto calling Akatsuki a "terrorist organization" and the role of Konoha in starting the Second Shinobi World War that made Nagato, Yakiho, and Konan war orphans……

Taking about boycotting, I want to bring back the issue to anime studies for a minute. Back in 2019, I was offered to review "The Anime Boom" (2017) by Michal Daliot-Bul and Nissim Otmazgin. On page xii, it reads: "The research for this book was generously funded by the Israel Science Foundation."

Engaging with this scholarship participates in legitimizing their funding source. I hope that's something anime studies can have a conversation about!

I don't find this statement to be enough but I was 23-24 at the time-still more backbone than a lot of senior academics I've met. Nowadays, I would just refuse to do the review. As I'm finalizing my thesis, I've ultimately decided to delete this source from my bibliography in alignment with PACBI.

the funding provenance of such work matters. A goal of a university should be to create an intellectual community in solidarity with marginalized peoples—especially through postcolonial and feminist hermeneutics. The current state of Israel does not appear to me as compatible with these precepts."

At the time of writing (2020), I added to the beginning of my review: "Before starting this review, I want to acknowledge that this book was made possible through the financial support of the Israel Science Foundation, a scientific organization financially supported by the State of Israel, (cont.)

Ask me how I know this entire article’s biblio was done by ChatGPT… I published in @pornstudiesjournal.bsky.social not Media and Communications Studies… and same for all the others. Disappointing bc this was such an interesting article: jplop.neocities.org/teac_online_...

One thing that helped the animation industry thrive that doesn't really exist anymore is a robust home video market. From the late '80s to the mid/late '00s, there was a decent amount of work to be found there and you could have success that existed outside of the theatrical/televised norms.

It’s funny to see the secret to making bank in animation is creating serialized shows catered towards girls/young women. Felt like, for the longest time, this was a demographic the big companies did everything they could to avoid appealing to! They musta left just SO much money on the table.

Michigan lawmakers have introduced a bill prohibiting the any "depiction or description" of trans people or trans existence online, including it in a bill banning "pornographic" material

The bill would completely erase trans people online, equating them with porn.
Total porn ban proposed by Michigan lawmakers
Some states have moved to require age verification to ensure only adults are watching porn, but no states have outright banned the viewing of pornographic material.
